Now I am an audio noob so don't take offense to this, but what the hell could a 2' x 4' panel be made out of to warrant a $240 price tag? I am sure its something that people with great ears see as a value, but I would have a hard time making that purchase.

No offense taken. Well, for one there are 10 of them, and secondly it's rather time consuming to construct good absorbers on your own. It's just like anything else. You can certianly roll your own (and we give you the info on this site on what to use to do it.)

As far the full retail price, well, that seems insane to me as well...

But the deal here is excellent.

If you take the time to calculate a rough per unit cost of fabric($4), wood($7) surrounding frame[to get a good square shape that looks professional] and a high quality acoustic foam($20), plus screws, glue and staples to put the things together; you'll realize that it would be difficult to build units with raw materials for the price that was offered here. You also save the time, which would probably be around 45-60 minutes each to make them neatly. Compare an estimated $31 each + time for DIY units that are comparable vs. $25 each + shipping offered here.

Oh I can see by looking at the retail price that this is a good deal. The root of my question is, what do these panels do? I mean are you essentially doing the same as putting carpet on the walls? only better?

I remember my father having thousands of panels and pyramid shaped things on the walls of his recording studio ... is this the same type of thing? Do they absorb sound?

Carpet will not absorb as broad a band of frequencies, and as evenly, as a purpose specific material such as high density acoustic foam. The panels in question are a high density acoustic foam that is framed/covered with an acoustically transparent cloth for decorative purposes. So, yes, they are basicly the same thing as your father had, but intended for a room where asthetics are important.

Ok. But can you tell me why they are so expensive? I mean are they hard to manufacture? Or made with some material only found on the floor of the black sea? Or is this another case of the manufacturer knowing that the people who buy this stuff have money and can afford it?

I don't know. I already detailed basicly what was involved, and the base consumer cost of materials[which would be cheaper in mass quantity as a manufacturer would buy them]. I suppose that $100 would be a fair price for one of these decorative panels, sold manufacturer direct from a small-scale operation, all things considered, but that figure is just a shot in the dark. :)
