Front Speaker Placement

Is there a rule of thumb as to how far apart the front speakers should be placed?

try to part the fronts the same distance you are to one of the channels (imagine equilateral triangle - 3 points of thr triangle is YOU, LEFT speaker and RIGHT speaker)

also, I've heard that the fronts should have at least 6 feet between them (not sure on this one)

I'd say at least 6ft or 8......and angle them in ever so slightly to face the center seating.:)

I know this is an old thread but it's close to my problem so I'll post here first and hope someone chimes in. I'm using the triangle rule for speaker placement (which is pretty much the same as the Dolby diagram with 25-30 degree angle from seating position to front speaker. The issue is...the speakers seem soooo far apart and far from the tv. My seating position is approx 12-13 feet away from the tv which has the speakers approx 13 feet apart. This just seems like it will look strange. Maybe I'm used to seeing too many advertising setups with the speakers close to the tv (which is probably not functional)? Any insight would be appreciated.

YEAP!!!.....but your ears are the real deciders....dont worry about what others say...listen for yourself... move them in each a 1 1/2 and try it out...see what you think....you may notice no real difference in sound and like the looks alot better for your setup:)

Thanks for the reply Daz3d. My only problem is that I have to decide on a general distance to mount the fronts so I can run my wire and have the proper supports put in the right place. I guess I'll move them in a bit closer and use the toe to fine tune the sound. It's just when I marked the spots on teh wall where the tv and fronts would be I couldn't believe how far apart they were.

toe in

I used to have my fronts pointing towards the middle seating position. After reading numerous articles I swung the speakers out a bit (pointing to the left and right seating positions).

After a few weeks I've decided that I liked it more where they were. I could not get the phantom centre channel with them turned out. And the stereo seperation really hurt my ears. With them turned in, the sound is more focused to the listening position and I find I don't get sore from that (except when I try to massage my feet by turning the volumn up and causing the floor to vibrate). :D Funny how that happens.

Other than that I have mine aboud 11 feat appart. Any further and I'd have to put them outside the house. :D

That's exactly how I'm feeling. But, I've read a couple folks in here say that sometimes aesthetics have to take a backseat to function and quality. I didn't pay all this money just for show. So I'll listen to the experts and put the speakers where they'll sound best. Thanks for the comments xbox.
