Can anyone explain what the frequency and phase knobs are for on my subs.
And can you tell me how I should adjust them
Frequency is the point the sub pass the signals to it and cut off higher signals. I prefer to set them just a tad above the crossover frequency the receiver is set at so you have less higher frequencies entering the sub and distraction by localizable higher frequencies.
Phase know adjusts the sub from 0 degrees, in phase hopefully, with the rest of the system to 180 deg out of phase, hopefully to place them into phase with the speakers. Some think that it is for accommodating the sub at different locations. Well, the distance setting for the sub in the receiver setup menu takes care of that part
And, human detection of phase is rather crude.
