Folks,
I was just looking for the DVD-A of this, and looked on several places and I can't seem to find it. I've heard it's pretty good, though, the only places I seem to be able to find it are in online stores in the UK and Canada. Is there anywhere in the US that anyone has found it?

I bought it (in store) at J&R (their Manhatten store) about a year and a half ago. I think it is one of the best sounding DVD-A that I own. I just went to their web site (www.jr.com) and don't see it listed (too bad). CDuniverse claims that this DVD-A is backordered (but at least they list it). Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Astrodon,
Hey, thanks for that! At least its a start. Went to cduniverse, and found it was indeed backordered, so had them email me when it is available. I will probably order it when it comes in... I've heard that this is supposed to be a really good album, and I am curious about Frank Sinatra. I've heard some of his music, and it really sounds good. Completely different era, different world. I'd love to show my grandfather this album... Bet he would like it. Especially once I get it running in surround!

Cap't, I also own the DVD-A and really do enjoy it. I hope you can eventually find it. Sinatra is great on this but may even be out-shined by Count Basie and his orchestra, conducted by Quincy Jones. They are really top notch here.

I love how they've left the room noise in the mix. It's not at all distracting, in fact it puts you at a table surrounded by others in the audience. You can hear an occasional quiet cough or throat clearing, as well as the ice cubes in people's glasses sitting nearby. A remarkable recording especially considering it was done 40 years ago.

I only have it on RBCD. Even there it is a super sounding recording. I didn't know it was available on DVD-A. I'm placing an order at my local emporium tomorrow.

Hawkeye,

Out of curiosity, where did you find your copy? I still cannot seem to find it anywhere except on RBCD, which I am sure would still be very nice, but if I can get the DVD-A, I want to get it.

Of all places I got it at Circuit City, but that was going on two years ago now. I really do hope you're able to locate a source to buy this from, it's a very nice recording. I've checked all the normal online sellers I can think of, with no luck but if I ever come across it for sale I'll drop the details in this thread. Best of luck in the mean time.

Hawkeye,
Interestingly enough, I found it on Amazon, in the UK! I suppose I could order it from them. It's only £11.99, which I believe is about $23.55, and shipping shows up as £3.02, which I think is $5.93, so for a grand total of almost 30 bucks, I can buy it there, or see if I can find it elsewhere. That is, IF they even will ship it to the US from there, and who knows how long that will take, or if I would have to pay import duties etc?

Finally Found It!

Folks,
Well I was finally able to get my hands on a copy of the DVD-A. It's pretty dang hard to find. Then when one does find it, it is really expensive. I already mentioned that I found it on Amazon.com in the UK, but after shipping it ended up being close to $40. I then found it a few times on e-bay but the guy selling it was selling it closer to $50, and I offered less than once, and he refused saying he had bought it for almost that much already and wanted more. So I declined. I then found it on some site called 5point1.com or something like that. I don't recall why I didn't order it from there, but I think it was more than I wanted to spend. I even went to the Brand Spankin New Fry's Electronics store here in town and they had it in their computers, but did not have it at any of their stores and could not order any new copies, I guess the supplier was no longer supplying it. Anyway, I figured I would just give up, and then one day I got an email from CDUniverse.com saying that they had finally gotten in some copies. I went to the website and it was backordered again. So I called them up and they said that several people had ordered it, and only 3 had come in and so since they had already ordered it they got it first, so I ordered it from there thinking that maybe they may end up getting some more in over the next few months. Lo and Behold a day later, I got a note from CDUniverse saying that the disc had shipped! Sure enough, I got it on Saturday! I was really excited and listened to the whole thing during lunch. I had been out digging in my yard again putting in some new lawn. I sat there fixated and just enjoyed the whole thing, until my wife said, "Uh, aren't you going to finish up outside?" So I had to save the second half for later... :) But it's a great sounding concert, and I really enjoyed his little comments, and even his monologue, talking about his cronies Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, and also Count Basie etc. Very well done. In fact, I may even go and buy the CD for my Grandparents now, I think they may really enjoy it.

Capt'n I'm really glad you were finally able to track down a copy. After months of anticipaton I sure hope it's everything you hoped it would be. Now be sure to listen carefully for the ice cubes :)

Now that you've got me thinking about it again, tonight I may have to give it a spin myself.

Enjoy!!

Captain Tinker,

That's great news! As I was reading your post, I was anticipating a horror story at the end (such as the disk arrived broken). I'm glad to hear that all was well and that you liked the disk.

I flew to New York a few weeks ago to visit my brother and to go to the Home Entertainment Show. In one of the rooms I heard the Linda Ronstadt DVD-A disk and really liked what I heard. Like your experience with Sinatra, I have trouble tracking down this DVD-A but finally found it on the Frys web site. It arrived yesterday and was happy to hear that it sounded as good on my system as I remembered hearing it at the show. It's a pity the DVD-A format is dying.

Cheers,
Astrodon

Astrodon,
I'm glad that you liked your new disc. I'm not really sure that DVD-A is really "dying" per se, just a rare breed. I think it is really coming down to economics, so few people even know what a DVD-A or SACD is to begin with, and not many people really have the setups to use them properly either, so demand is low, therefore supply is low. *shrug* I do think that they will survive, but it will probably always be in low numbers. In my opinion, there are only so many albums that would even be worth having on those formats.
But then again, even if they ever really do go away, there are still many DAC's and high end players that can make a vanilla cd sound like an SACD, so either way, I think I will be happy... Dang this is a fun hobby! :D

Capt,

I like your optimism and I hope you are right. By the way, great avatar! Ben Grimm would be proud.

Yeah, you know I just saw the Fantastic 4 for the first time two weeks ago. Actually, I take that back, I "saw" it on an airplane once a while back, but only parts of it as I was trying to snooze, and didn't get the earphones. So I had been wondering if it was any good. I have to admit I have not at all been impressed by many of the comic books that have been made into movies. Most of the Batman movies were either too corny or too scary, the first Spiderman was a yawn, the Hulk looked fake, and Superman looked boring. I did enjoy the first X-Men movie, but have not yet seen the next two, but I am interested to see them, and the new Fantastic 4 movie looks interesting. I was just thinking it was time for a new Avatar, even though I really liked Jorgen Von Strangle. I thought one of the Fantastic 4 would be neat, but I couldn't use the Invisible Woman, for obvious reasons, Mr. Fantastic wasn't much like me, neither is the Human Torch, or even Dr. Doom, but I can sort of identify with Ben Grimm. So I chose him.
