Hello. My wife and I are moving into a new house next month and I'll finally be able to add some decent sound to my 46" Samsung 650. I was thinking about the Klipsch Quintet 3s, their Sub10, and a Yamaha RXV663. All of this is going into a fairly small room. Plus, I work for a retailer and get an amazing discount on all this stuff (under 1000 after tax for the speakers/receiver mentioned above).

Is there something else you guys would recommend?
Is it worth the extra money to go for the SLQuintet/Sub12?

I get discounts on all the other brands we carry: polk, onkyo, sony
I plan to use it for music, movies, and gaming. Thanks

+3 for the money, the above would be a better bang for buck over that klipsch line. The SVS being the big one;)

If B&M stores are your only consideration audition as speakers many as possible and for your budget id at least think about an ID sub .

thanks for the replies guys.

i'll look more into the svs speakers.

so i take it my receiver choice stands up to your scrutiny? im looking for something that can handle dts-hd/dolby hd, has upconverting capabilities (dont much care about upscaling), and 7.1 if i decide to add two more speakers sometime in the future.

You should always choose speakers first, then select a receiver with proper power, and features after that.

The Yamaha RXV663 is an excellent receiver. And would be a fine receiver for any of the speaker mentioned.

I'd stay away from the Sub-10, it's woefully underpowered and noisy.

You mentioned $1000 -- is that your total budget for receiver, sub, and speakers?

For the sub, the bang for the buck choice is the SVS 25-31 PCi ($549). Awesome output if you don't mind the cylinder. Or at very least a PB-10 ($429). For home theater a good sub is a MUST.

AV123 has the X-CS on clearance for $89/ea. 5 of them paired with one of the subs above you'd have a great starter system.

Yamaha and Denon both make great receivers, you can't really go wrong with anything in their lines. Same goes for this years Onkyos.

Since you work for the retailer my assumption is that you'll have pretty good leaway on returns (to audition at home). I would try as many different speakers you have in store that you can. Even if you decide not to buy from your store it will give you a chance to figure out what you like.

well they wouldn't be happy about me returning stuff to my own store, but being in there all day gives me plenty of time to play around and listen. What do you guys think about the following Polk speakers?

TSI100 (bookshelf x4)
PSW125 (sub)
CS10 (center)

"You mentioned $1000 -- is that your total budget for receiver, sub, and speakers?"

Its the number I would like to stay under for all three, but I get the stuff we carry at cost

pretty limited. bose, klipsch, sony, yamaha, mtx, and polk.

i was looking at the SVS PB12-NSD. in your opinion, would it be worth an extra $650 to go with that?

I second the vote for the yamaha 663 for receiver. Great solid receiver and you should hopefully get a good deal.

If going with polk I would suggest listening to the rtiA series if your store has them. They are nice sounding speakers, IMO, but at full retail usually don't have the best "bang for buck" compared to other options.
Unless your store is offering the free polk sub with 500$ purchase I would stay away. It would be better than nothing, but people have listed much better alternatives here.

Sony speakers are cheap and not too bad, but they have weak centers.

Klipsch tends to be a love it or hate it sound. You'll have to decide for yourself.

Bose is not worth your time to even listen to.

MTX I don’t have any experience with.

Remember to have fun!

There would be absolutely no comparison between the PB12-NSD and the Klipsch S10. Neither would the PB10-NSD be for that matter. Just keep in mind that the PB12-NSD does EVERYTHING the PB10-NSD does, but just gives you more of it. That is, more slam down real deep and more over-all output given that it has a larger enclosure as well as employing a larger driver. Hope this helps as many here have made some excellent suggestions. Good luck in your decision.

Cheers,

Phil
