Anyone else into folk metal? I'm just starting to get into it, but I am enjoying it a lot, although I've really only listened to three bands so far... Turisas, Tyr, and Alestorm. Anyone listen to this stuff? :D

Folk Metal? Is that an oxymoron?
Not really, lol. I mean folk music is totally different from metal, but not when you look at the definition of folk. I mean, what is fold music, in my understanding of the word, is music written by people of a certain areas using the traditional music and style of their area. It's quite awesome, actually. The band that I have been listening to the most, Turisas, is from Finland and they have a very Old Northern European flavor to it. You should give it a try :D

haha, lol, it's cool. You just can't stand metal or what? I made one of my friends listen to it, and they hate metal, and they thought it was interesting and said that it wasn't half bad XD

Sounds interesting. I'm pretty into melodic death metal myself (as evidenced by my Soilwork avatar). Is it similar?

Hey, I can do this!
Not often I find people with similar tastes in music.
Came across this band on Amazon I think, bought their newest album. It's alright, had some good songs but didn't like it as much as I hoped. I think they have potential so I will check out their future releases. They're a duo female fronted band (I tend to prefer female fronted bands more lately)-
http://www.midnattsol.com/ (Nordic folk metal)

This group was a blind buy at Best Buy based on cd artwork (I really need to stop doing that). Actually, I quite like it. Male singer, some growling on it (which I usually do not like), but there are a couple of songs on the album I just can't get enough of, and I see they just released a new album, I need to go buy that-

Of course there's the more popular of the these type of bands, like Leaves Eye - http://www.leaveseyes.de/

If you end up liking them, there are similar bands to look into, like Epica- http://www.epica.nl/

I now have to go and check out the bands you mentioned.

You forgot the jaw-harp! :p

A lot of music uses "folk melodies" in their stuff, but it doesn't always sound like it. That would be my guess, Jamie. I mean, if Coltrane improvises on a folk tune, it doesn't really sound like folk. Or if you have a renaissance mass based on folk melody, that doesn't either. Or even more recent classical composers like Bartok and Stravinsky used folk melodies, and some of their stuff scares people. :p

I think it's mainly the instruments that they play and the feeling that they add to the music. If you are missing it, then I doubt that I will be able to explain it to you any better (cause I'm terrible are explaining these kinds of things).
