Fluance XL7F response curves

These are hideous... what would cause such a steep step between 700and 800 Hz? Yet they received a fairly decent review in Soundstage

The jump up at 700Hz makes the drop at 800Hz look much more drastic than it probably is in actuality. It really is a strange looking graph, most of the time when I look at frequency response graph the SPL axis has a much smaller range, which makes the curve in turn look smoother.

That being said that drop is rather concerning, although it could have been an abnormality in the test or the environment.

For the sake of full disclosure, after reading the review on Audioholics back in May I purchased a pair of the XL7Fs and have thus far really enjoyed them, and they're definitely out performed their price tag (and from what I understand when I spoke to their customer support upon purchase the center channel and surround are supposed to be out before the new year)

Probably worth noting that that it has a crossover at 800Hz from the 8" down firing woofer to the dual 6.5" midrange drivers.

Measuring a speaker with drivers firing from multiple cabinet faces is tricky. Take a look at my review which gives a more complete picture of performance. the bump at 100Hz is real and a result of Fluance not filtering the bottom firing woofer until a much higher crossover point.

Could the port resonance be adding to the 700-800Hz range to cause the peakiness?

I can't remember which review mag it was - some European one, Dutch or German maybe - but their measurements show that alot of ported speakers have resonance peaks in that frequency range or a little higher... And in some cases, the resonance peak was not much lower in SPL than the total response, which showed a peak in that particular frequency range.

They're budget towers from a mostly low end budget manufacturer. Its all in the context of things. They received a good review because for a $400 3 way tower they didn't perform too bad, especially in the actual listening portion of the review. These aren't Revels or Phil Harmonic they are Fluance. Of course they aren't going to measure absolutely perfect thats why they are low end budget speakers.

Are you kidding me a $200 speaker didnt have an impressive reading? LOL, they are cheap, for that price you did good if they didnt burn down your house while your sleeping... Think about it, For $200 you are getting a 40lb speaker that had to come here from CHINA, I bet I couldnt ship a package that size to china for that price, lol...
$200 that is 5 hours of work for most people... graph looks fine to me, lol:D
Obviously if these speakers were $2000 this company would be getting sued, but I heard a few of their products, and them make sound, nothing great, but definitely not unlistenable jibberish...

For all of you who brought money into the equation.. I'm already more than aware of that. Thanks for pointing out the obvious. Seesh. I was more interested in one would cause a spike like that is all but you missed the boat on that one. ;) excpet Gene.

The way you worded your first post. You probably should have just asked the middle portion of whats causing the 700-800 step, without questioning Soundstages review and saying "these are hideous" which some could mistake as you saying these speakers are horrible.
