Fluance XL7F plus centre or Axiom M2v4 with VP100 or Ascend Acoustics

Good day,

I'm planning to get some new speakers for my home theater. The room would be 10.5W x 15L x 9H.
I'm in Canada and would like to do in on a budget. I have rear ceiling speakers already installed. I know that this is not ideal but it's the only way the wife would say yes. I will also get the SVS PB1000.

Now, what would be my best option?
I can get the Fluance XL7F with the centre for $560 or should I get the Axiom M2v4 with VP100 for $618 or
should I spend the money and get the Ascend Acoustics CBM 170 with the CMT 340 Centre for approximately $920.

Ascend is the best choice out of these, however two things : uae don't use cmt340 center with cmb170. Cmb170 have a center version. B) wave crest audio is designed by same folks as ascend. You may want to look their way. Save some money for better sub :) hsu vtf2 for example

thank you BoredsysAdmin. I just checked out wave crest audio and that might work for me. I hope the shipping cost and brokerage fee does not kill the value of the speakers.

Buying outside of Canada at this time is not going to be very cost effective.

Firstly, our exchange rate is abysmal - 77 Cents to the USD after the credit card fees;

Shipping from the US has increased dramatically to where it is almost prohibitive now, especially for large packages like speakers; and

Depending on the shipper, brokerage fees & sales taxes are absolutely punitive.

You would be best to put your money into gear instead of all the places along the way that siphon off your money.

BTW, I used the VP100V3 for a couple of years & it was excellent for its size & form factor. Since I acquired a new HT Stand that could accommodate a bigger CC, I traded it at Axiom for the VP160 that has turned out to be just an outstanding performer. If you are space limited, the VP100 will work just fine...

Most of the major Canadian brands are very decent & you won't go wrong with any of them. Although I own 3 sets of Axioms & really like them, I understand from what I've read both here & elsewhere that Fluance represents good bang for the buck.

If you live in southern Ontario, you probably can actually visit the Paradigm factory or drive up to Dwight, ON & spend a day with the fine Axiom folks there. It is really quite fascinating watching speakers being fabricated, finished & seeing the anechoic chamber in action.

In the end, it is your subjective preferences when it comes to choosing speakers. Nobody else can make that choice for you.

Good luck in your quest...

Ascends is a BIG improvement both sonically and build quality over the other choices in your initial post. It is more costly but it really depends on how you see the investment. If you plan on keeping the products for 10+ years then the cost becomes a wash. If you plan on flipping products every few years then that is a different consideration. You should also consider SVS as they have distribution in Canada. Paradigm and PSB are also great alternatives.

Check out our ID Speaker Comparison article as it shows you what each company offers and also the hidden fees involved in upgrading the products to premium parts and/or trial periods and shipping policies.

BoredSysAdmin: wave crest audio is a no go since they don't ship to Canada.

Gene: Thank you for the link, I read it and learned a lot. I am not totally confused. hehehe. I am not leaning towards the SVS prime bookshelf speakers with matching center. It's free shipping to Canada and priced similar to Axiom. I would do more reading...

I would personally favour the Ascend...having owned Axiom, Energy. I've also auditioned other Canadian brands like PSB, Paradigm. I will admit, I have no experience with the CBM 170'S or 340s...so...I can't really comment on them but Ascend closely voices all their speakers. As was suggested earlier contact Curtis @ Wavecrest Audio about shipping to Canada...he's a good person and I respect greatly. Looks like your working with a decent budget somewhere in the range of 600-1k...I understand you might be apprehensive looking at ID brands but its my opinion they do offer some great value and I would strongly urge you to research some of the logical candidates. Lastly...the PB1000 is a good starting point sub for us Canucks.

Have you looked into PSB/ Paradigm yet? Both are Canadian speaker companies. Check the site below to see if you have a PSB dealer near you..

Being from Canada its likely to early for camping...hiking on the other hand is a distinct possibility. No matter I just thought it was worth a bump...:)

Some people like the cold - however, the thread was worth a bump.

I figured he was frustrated with the exchange situation and was binging maple syrup in retaliation!
