floorstander tweeter height...

Hi all,

If ear height is the "best" position for the tweeters of your mains then why do floor standing speakers rarely have the tweeter at ear level? This is estimating that average ear height on a standard size sofa/recliner for an average person would be about 44"-46". Most floorstanders seem to be designed for short peaple on a futon.

I understand that making speakers taller would increase the price but...What am I missing?

Also with this in mind why do designers put the midrange over the tweeter sometimes?

Just wondering aloud again,

Don't know the answer to your question...but my tweeters are higher than ear height by just a bit in my towers. I don't think it's enough to change the frequency response a whole lot. Don't they just roll off faster when you are off the speakers axis? My guess is that they take the average height of people on a couch like you did and experiment with the off-axis response of the tweeter to find a height that gives good results from the average heights of people on a couch. If they don't, then I'm assuming it would sound less bright at ear height, which is probably the same assumption you came to.

Floorstander risers

Good point.
To increase the tweeter height closer to level, av123 offers risers for some of their floorstanders. They match the speaker and also increase the stability.

I know that the cabinet size effect the tuning of the woofers in addition to the cost and weight considerations of larger cabinets. Many 3-way designes have different chambers to isolate the mids from woofers adding to the cost and complexity.

I thought of these when I was posting.

I thought of cabinet size for tuning and understand its importance but isn't having the tweeter at ear height just as important?

I'm sure cost is a concern but some pretty expensive speakers are also pretty short.

any thoughts on why the mid over the tweet?
