Fixed/Variable outputs

I previously had a set-up in a bedroom using the audio out of the tv to feed an amp. It was set to variable which allowed you to control the volume with the tv remote. We replaced the tv with a new Samsung LED and it only has a fixed output, no option for variable. Any ideas on how to convert it to variable and still have some type of remote control over the volume.
I found a line level volume control but that would not give remote control over the volume.

When you say amp, is that Power amp, AVR or Pre-Pro?

When you say amp, is that Power amp, AVR or Pre-Pro?

It is a local source audio sensing amplifier part of a distributed audio system and takes variable line level and amplifies it with no controls or adjustments.
