Hello

I'm planning to purchase my very first audio-system and I would like to get second option from professionals.

As my budget is limited what do you think of following setup -

https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-R-N301BL-Network-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B00NUVS4L8

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yamaha-NSF51-Floorstanding-Speakers-Black/dp/B00X3BQZ70

Dont care much about surround sound therefore it is just 2.0 and I guess it would be nice to have all the new network features like airplay and dlna.

Please give your advice if its okay or what would you change?

Thanks,
Rivo

Are you in the UK? Your location may influence the advice given.

How do you feel about refurbs? If you are OK with the risk of a refurb vs saving $, then consider
http://www.accessories4less.com/

I'm certain that you can do better on the speakers for equal $.

OK, that will make it much more difficult to give you good recommendations.

In general, Yamaha electronics are good and well built. I don't have any direct experience with that unit, but Yamaha has never let me down yet.

What other speakers are available to you? Yammy isn't really known for the greatest speakers (though there are a couple models that have a fanatic following).

Yamaha speakers can be decent - however, look at brands like JBL, Boston, and Wharfedale

There's nothing wrong with the combo you posted, but you don't match necessarily the power handling capabilities of the speaker with the amp. More important to make sure the amp can handle the impedance load and can provide you with the volume levels (spl) you want (if the speakers can handle such....the max wattage rating for a speaker is more a melting point rather than something useful; many speakers will sound like crap if you supply such to them). Try something like this spl calculator to see how the relationship of speaker sensitivity and power over given distances work out...

I'd also look at other than Yamaha speakers....

Is it possible for you to audition any speakers or will you have to buy without doing so? That site is a bit confusing as to whether it's a single or pair price altho in the general specs it says there are two speakers in the "kit" for the 130 and only one in the "kit" for the 170 but sold as a pair so I think the price is per pair....at Amazon US the 170 goes for USD 140 each, the 130 for USD 300 the pair, if that helps.

Yes, I can do audition for those speakers.

As the price for the JBL floor-standing and bookshelf is more or less same, which would you recommend?

And one more question as I'm planning to put speakers close to TV, should I have these speakers active even when watching regular news/tv show or big speakers are more for Movies and Music?

I use my speakers for music, movies, TV/netflix, etc. Just use the speakers for everything.

The choice b/w towers and bookshelf speakers usually comes down to the sub. If you have a sub or will add a sub, then bookshelf speakers are fine. If you are trying to go without a sub, then towers make more sense.

If this is primarily for movies, then you want at least 1 sub.

to add to slippery, generally speaking, if a bookshelf costs as much as a tower from the same company, the bookshelf will have better quality parts, drivers, etc. if you're getting a sub I'd go for the bookshelf.

clear, tnx again for all the info :)

I went to store and was recommended by the following to products:

bookself 225€ a pair -
http://www.wharfedale.co.uk/product.php?pid=76

and if I want the same quality parts with previous then it would cost 400€ pair for floorstanding ones -
https://www.polkaudio.com/products/tsx-330t

Quite big price difference, but I will do the audition soon.

PS. One more question - what is the best way to send music from macbook or NAS to receiver?
with movies its easy as it comes from tv, I suppose.

Kodi software support playback of audio and video files from NAS shares. It also supports AirPlay to play audio files straight from macbook.
The best part is you could have Kodi runs on vast variety or hardware from Amazon firetv stick to nVidia Shield TV and everything in between.

As mentioned above, wharfedale makes excellent value speakers. As for JBL Arena - not sure , as I don't speak the language, but likely price IS different - bookshelves typically sold as pairs, towers as each (single speaker)
Good friend of mine bought JBL Arena 120 speakers and was quite happy with them. I expect 130 to sound similar but a bit more bass. 170 would be louder and even more bass.

Nothing wrong with Yamaha receivers - they tend to last long time, but I prefer Denon/Marantz auto room calibration system.

Also I'd check swedish XTZ speakers - they also very good and since they closer to you, might be cheaper to ship.
edit:
XTZ brand correction
