Just throwing this out there but you might want to start off my replacing the surround on the woofer.....it doesn't look healthy.;):p

Seems like the DIY bug is going around. Take it apart and find out if these are in fact worth spending time and money on. You must identify them first and then wait for somebody like TLS to tell you it's not worth it. :)

I wouldn't kid about something like this. ;)

alex- they are bolivar model 18 speakers. I don't want to put alot of money into them. I just want to replace all the speakers with 8 ohms drivers. That means i will have to change the crossovers. Anyway will get back to you all when i have some money to put into it.

I'm not really the speaker guy but if you think you are going to start swapping speakers and crossovers around you better have been to school or something. It's not that simple and I only know enough not to do it, not how to do it. If you are going to replace anything with original parts, then it's no problem.

In my opinion it's not best to match a driver to a box.

I think it's easier to match a box to a driver.

If you want a fun easier kit try out a Madisound Recession Buster kit.
I suggest you follow my thread if interested.

It's kinda like putting a good engine in a poorly designed vehicle.
Of course my uncle pulled it off with his old Station Wagon, but he's also a mad tech and mechanic

Now like Alex I'm new to this hobby, but we both have learned what we know from Wmax, TLS Guy and several other very smart guys.

I was thinking these speakers would be good for the garage if i ever buy a house. I have been looking on Madisounds web page as well for ideas. I like what i see:D

You could look at it this way, whatever you replace that main woofer with, it will most likely sound better than the existing woofer :D

Honestly though if you are after anything that represents good clean quality sound the odds are against you to find a good match that is different than OEM replacement parts.

I'd scrap the boxes and start from scratch. I tried to find a cost effective driver to match a pair of damaged polk audio RT3's and ended up scrapping the whole replacement idea and building boxes from scratch. The new speakers sound very good.

I'm not saying it can't be done, just saying its tougher than you think. It was for me atleast.

The drivers don't look that bad except for the surrounds; contact looneytune2001 on eBay and see if he can set you up with a refoam kit.

ok. I just got a chance to pull the crossovers out of these speakers. I am thinking about just mounting the new crossover right to the old crossover plate. I think this will work very well.

here is a better photo of the front of the cabnet.
