My A/V gear currently consists of 'discontinued' models, is it worth keeping them connected to the internet for firmware updates? To reduce wiring and clutter I'm thinking of taking everything 'off the grid'.

If it does what you need it to, you can disconnect it.

Since I listen to internet radio I'd have to keep the AVR connected to the 'net.

I'd avoid firmware updates unless you really need them to fix something; if you do a firmware update I'd go with a usb download or at least a wired connection to avoid issues. If you have a setting for turning off automatic updates maybe do that. There aren't that many updates to worry about either in general IME and mostly they come out fairly soon after release.

Yep...
Only upgrade your firmware if it...

A. Fixes a problem or security issue you are having
B. Adds something you want
or
C. Gives you a puppy

If it offers you a Chia Pet, decline...
They poop EVERYWHERE...
