Mostly the noise aspect, even though this often isn't a problem in real-world.

Totally agree - I hope that it didn't seem like I was arguing before.

Thermal protection can be incredibly simple, such as - if the fan doesn't pass current, then no power gets to the amplifiers. Or, a simple mechanical thermal switch that opens when a temperature threshold is reached.

For anyone interested (and I know that I've waxed poetic on this in the past ), the vast majority of weight in a heat sink has nothing to do with keeping the amps cool. If the amps always output the same amount of power, none of the weight would be important - none of it. The only reason mass located right by the amps is important is to help dampen out the temperature rise during transient power spikes. All that matters in long-term steady operation is thermal resistance. So, the four critical parameters for the heat sink are (1) surface area exposed to the room air, (2) rate of air flow over the heat sink, (3) thermal resistance within the heat sink itself, and (4) thermal resistance between the electronics and the heat sink. (The first two parameters contribute to give the thermal resistance between the heat sink and the air.) Because fans dramatically increase the air flow rate, it allows for lower surface areas for the heat sinks. Aluminum is better than steel because it has about 1/4 of the thermal resistance within the heat sink itself for the same geometry, plus it weighs less. A good thermal interface material can sometimes be critical because a lot of the temperature rise along that whole path from the electronic component to the air can occur at the interface between the component and the heat sink. Anywaaaay, just trying to say that the weight of the heat sink isn't what keeps things cool and is just a result of other design criteria.

One flat pack sub is completely assembled. Due to the Holidays and that TV purchase getting them painted just isn't an option right now. Maybe over the summer or next school year I can figure something out.

The second is almost completely together and I only started it last night. I've been experimenting with less glue, less clamping pressure and shorter clamp times as I've put these together in order to test out some information I found online. So far it has been pretty accurate.

So the second box is together. However the LMS Ultra is a lot taller than the box allows for. I had to do a little cutting to make it work, the real pain was that the box was already together when I discovered this. On the upside it gave me a chance to use the Fein for the first time. After using it I can honestly say it was worth every penny.

Correct. I only barely got the 64" 8000 home in one piece. If I were to sell the 8500 I highly doubt it would ever fit in either vehicle I've got, at least still in the box.

So the wire management still sucks, but I ain't got the time or energy to figure that out right now. I'm just happy to have the system mostly complete. I still have to calibrate it all and break out the measurement mic and figure out where I need to start the low end boost and that's assuming the mic and soundcard work without me having to fiddle with everything. It may sound like I'm complaining, but I like the tweaking part where I get to fiddle with the FR response and tailor the sound to my tastes.

Anywho, here's the front soundstage. This was before I put the center speaker back. Currently the center sits right in front of the subs and really obscures them from view for the most part. I'm not sure how that's going to affect the sound, but I'm sure I'll find out.



This is where the other sub ended up. I have the TV and the printer all sitting on sorbothane pads to hopefully absorb most of the vibration from the subs.

!@#$. One of my UXL's has a loose dustcap. I e-mailed Mark at IST to see what he has to say. I'm hoping he says I can just apply some superglue or something to it. Luckily I now have dual LMS Ultras to use in the meantime.

I think it's 92". I don't know if I'll ever bother with the wire management because it looks like we might end up moving again this summer. We'll have to wait and see.
