Hello,

What's your favourite movie for testing home theatre systems?

I don't have many movies to play but I like War of The Worlds.

War of the Worlds is a good test for LFE. I like to use Master and Commander to test the surround sound dynamics, nothing beats cannon fire.:D

I like Master and Commander as well for surround, and it also has many dark scenes which show contrast/brightness problems.

Another good one is U-571, especially the depth charge scene.

Star Wars I: Pod Race scene is good for LFE, surround, and fast moving objects and backgrounds.

Saving Private Ryan and Gladiator: DTS only for channel balance.

Good choices all. I won't call it a favorite movie, but Eragon has an amazing amount of LFE. Especially the opening scene and the battle scene near the end. Of course sitting 12" from a PB12Plus/2 may have something to do with the holy.... effect. :D

I think the fighting scenes in Pearl Harbor and Saving Private Ryan are a treat for surround. :)

Don't really have a favorite DVD but when auditioning an Arcam AVR300, the dealer was using King Kong(2005 version) and there are so many different sounds in this movie from planes shooting/flying to the battle of Kong fighting a T-Rex etc. etc., it's actually the most dynamic DVD I've heard. Also, I do own Pearl Harbour and it's excellent as well.

I'd have to second the King Kong movie. Kong's throaty roars are constantly challenging the LFE. And for surround effects the jungle sounds are out of this world.

Not another, "What DVD do you like?" thread. :p

I'll also second Master and Commander. I personally don't own the disc, but there's a battle scene that is on one of the Demo discs I got from AVS, that is awesome. Great explosions and there's a scene where the sailors are running around on the deck above you that sounds really cool. When I was watching this, the wife started looking around thinking, "what the hell are the neighbors doing?" It was hella funny.

Definitely Master & Commander. The entire movie sounds incredible. U-571 HD-DVD is also great, and King Kong on HD-DVD. The picture on that one doesn't hurt either. ;)

How is the movie? I was thinking of picking this one up on blu-ray but have heard mixed reviews.
Worth watching for the sound, or worth watching in general?

war of the worlds in dts, primarily the scene early on where street is cracking, it literally feels as if the furniture & floor is moving if i'm playing at juvenile levels. if it's up too high my cary 500 monoblocks go into protection.

band of brothers, virtually any of the battle scenes but particularly the shelling when the troops are entrenched above foy. on the shelling, if it's up too high my cary 500 monoblocks go into protection.

heat - when they blow the doors off the armored truck & all the windows of a row of cars shatters, & the gunfight in the street after they come out of the bank.

gone in 60 seconds, the chase scene with the shelby gt500, was never a fav until i demoed a 5910 & then wow

saving private ryan, opening scene & battle at the end, particularly when the mustang flies over

flags of our fathers, when the corsairs fly between the ship rows & the battle scenes

avp, fight scenes in general & when the spaceship fires the lazer into the ice

i have not tried it, but my dealer recently went to a seminar at mcintosh where they had the mac flagship speakers w/ their 2000 watt monoblocks, watching casino royale, & according to him the explosion at the beginning at the embassy pegged the meters... my system beats the dealer's for sound but watching part of casino royale on the runco projector w/ the 2:35:1 lens & the curved stewart screen was the best picture i have seen to date

my pick

I like Kill Bill volume 2, where she fights the girl with the ball and chain. The surround on that is off the hook.

I thought the movie was pretty lame. I only bought it because it got such a good review for picture quality on Blu-ray.

Surround-shmound. That disc is worth buying just for Go-go. Chiaki Kuriyama is SSSSSOOOOOOO hot!!! By the way, that's on volume 1, not 2.

Search the movies area, there are a minimum of 10 threads like this already.....

Could we just combine all these threads and sticky it so it never has to be asked again. Next week and the week after and the week after that...???
