Fake surround in broadcast.

What's the point of it? I'd say about 60% of the time stations are playing back stereo content matrixed to 5.1. This is obvious based on the fact that there is channel crosstalk such as voice finding it's way into the surrounds, and the fake lfe channel which is really just a doubling of bass into the sub. What irritates me about this is most of the content this is being done to is available in 5.1 anyways, so why aren't we getting it?

What program material do you see this? Movies, weekly series programs or just news or morning shows?

May also want to contact your local channel that it comes through and ask them about the audio transmission and their local program material. Their engineering department may be of help.

Usually on reruns of stuff. Yesterday it was American dad on tnt, Criminal minds on a channel I can't recall, and then the dark Knight on syfy. I was just flipping through channels and noticed it. News broadcasts are most likely matrixed but that makes sense. Watching something like the walking dead on amc, it's true 5.1, and most original air dates such as family guy on Fox is 5.1. I can easily tell the difference.

On another note, I never noticed how crappy regular dolby digital is. Artifacts are obvious compared to DD+ and lossless formats.

Generally I don't even watch cable except for maybe news, guess these are just more reasons to "cut the cord" and go straight streaming.

Dolby digital has a lot of flavors including all the way down to Dolby Stereo, and some broadcasts will just call it "Dolby" not specifying what it is. I normally "force" stereo for everything unless it is surround because I don't need to hear news in PLII.

It's definitely not in stereo because my receiver says it's 5.1 DD on the display. I know dolby's broadcast equipment includes matrix decoding and it's obvious they're using that.

Well, there are settings on some TVs to transmit everything as DD or DTS to the receiver so it "sees" one type of audio regardless of what the broadcast is. Maybe you have this on? My dad's is like that.

My sat boxes have been like this. You can choose DD, DTS, and PCM.

DD can be in 2.1.
