Factory Refurbished Receivers...

Hey all,

I have shopped a few times at accessories4less.com and I have been very satisfied with their customer service and their shipping.

I am in the market for a new Onkyo TX SR875 and that accessories4less site is an official Onkyo retailer.

However every receiver they sell from Onkyo has been factory reconditioned or refurbished... They come with a 1 year warranty and I have the option to purchase an extended warranty up to 5 years for 59.99, and because they are an official Onkyo seller that means they can actually honor the warranty.

My question being, what does a factory recondition mean? Will there be anything less to this receiver, or would it perform to slightly less specifications?

In my opinion, saving $700 off the list price and being able to get a 5 year warranty for an extra $60 is a no brainer, but maybe there is something I am missing. I often hear people avoid reconditioned/refurbished units, so there must be some reason I am not aware of.

Thanks.

We live in canada buddy. Don't forget that the warranty often voids when crossing the border.

A refurbished unit is a defective unit that has been returned to the company. They repaired the item are now selling it at a lower price.

I'm a huge advocate of refurbished/reconditioned or used equipment, the amount of money you can save on these is quite substantial compared to brand new, off the shelf equipment.

Typically, refurbished/reconditioned equipment was either a returned product, had issues and required repair was previously opened at some point in time. One positive out of refurbished equipment is that if there was a problem, it's been corrected and now has been through more than one QA cycle, so unless there's a reoccurring issue, the chances of you having issues with it due to manufacturing defect is low. The only downside is if in fact there is a reocurring issue that might be encountered, but the chances of this being the case are small.

In my own experience, the reconditioned/refurbished equipment I've purchased is in brand new condition and you'd never be able to tell otherwise. Another big benefit of going this route is being able to afford equipment that is usuallly two or three steps up from what you'd be paying for if it were brand new. And quite often, you get either the same manufacturer's warranty or if it's a shorter one, you can almost always purchase an extended warranty if it's a reputable source you're buying from.

I'd highly recommend it having had an almost perfect track record purchasing in this manner, you'll be glad you did... -TD

I would do it!

It is a no brainer in my opinion as well.

Reconditioned, Refurbished, B-Stock items are practically just as good as new products IMO. They have all been checked out and certified by Onkyo. And that 5 year warranty is sweet.

I say go for it!!!

Thanks for the explanation guys, I think I will go ahead and try it out... realistically, with a 5 year warranty, how can you lose?

I was just hesitant because I thought that perhaps the refurbed receiver would have been toned down in some specs, say watts per channel or something so it didn't quite perform to original spec but a little less and it works just fine.

Not only are warranties voided, at some of these places, we don't even have access to the refurbished product.

Sometimes Refurbished is new

More than a coincidence that the same units appear at the same time on multiple sites like Overstock etc.....hard to believe that many are all defective or opened on some brands....If that were the case, I wouldnt consider that brand....Thats why I doubt it frankly....my brother buys them frequently and has found most have original packaging, no sign of case being opened and crisp manual with no bent edges....and they restrict the warranty to 90 days.....pretty reliable rumors that a lot of these items are simply first quality "overstock" that the manufacturer wants to liquidate with limited warranty liability.....that makes them a very good deal indeed if they are half price since most major failure occur right out of the box or shortly thereafter.....

You are right on that one, if I want to buy one of these Onkyo's, I have to have my friend who lives in the states buy it then I drive down and pick it up.

I would go for it too. It seems like the most cost effective way to go. Add to that, the 5 year warranty, works for me. Good luck with your purchase.
