External Speakers for CRT TV w/ No Outputs

I have a pair of Mission bookshelf speakers I'd like to use to supplement the integrated speakers in my in-law's Panasonic 32" CRT TV. The problem is that the TV has only 2 sets of inputs (L/R audio & composite video, and coax). There are no outputs! Are there any options to connect a pair of speakers, short of performing surgery on the TV?

Run the cable to an external tuner (VCR) then to the TV. Connect the sound outputs from the VCR to whatever you want the sound to go to. You'll have to use the VCR as the tuner.

Does the TV have headphone output? If it has that you could use a mini jack to rca adapter.

I'm not sure this would work, as they have 2 sources - antenna and satellite - both going into a TiVo. I don't know of a way to get both sources into their VCR, and then split again into the TiVo. I believe the TiVo wouldn't be able to correctly identify all channels (antenna and satellite), and thus would not be able to correctly record. It would work for sure if they had one source (or if I wanted external speakers for only 1 source). Hmm, that's an idea. Thanks.

No headphone output - it's a basic TV. But the idea above sounds like it might work...

The TiVo Series 2 single tuner DVR has two sets of audio outputs. If they are both active at the same time, that would work. I have one set going to the TV's inputs, and the other going to the Mission bookshelve speakers. Can someone tell me how to connect speaker wire to standard RCA-type inputs/outputs?

You won't get any sound connecting speakers directly to the RCA outputs, they are signal level and need to be amplified.... you need a stereo receiver at the very least to handle the preamp and amplification duties.

Well, of course, that makes sense. That did seem a little too easy... So the only way I can utilize these external speakers is to introduce a receiver. This is good to know. Thanks.

You can pick up a stereo receiver used for really cheap. Look for Onkyo and H/K, should be pretty easy to find. New you can pick them up for about $100-150 also.
