Extended warrantys - do you need them?

Seriously, I have no life.
Or another angle, if it did fail in say 3 years, would you want to repair it or would you rather go get something new that has 3 years newer technology?
Depends on whether the technological updates make a noticeable difference. Many seem to be added just for the sake of saying they made changes.

Visions Electronics in Canada (well, here in Winnipeg anyway) offers an extended warranty on most products...the difference being that if you don't use it, at the end of the extended warranty period you get a store credit for the full value of that warranty.

If you expect to buy products from them in the future, it appears to be a win/win.

I just bought a new receiver from Vanns that I am pretty excited about. It was the Onkyo TXNR3008. They had it for $1230.00 with no tax and free shipping. The receiver comes with a Onkyo manufactures warranty for 2 years. On Onkyo's website you can even purchase a 2 year extension warranty for $85.00. So that's 4 years of coverage for $85.00. The only draw back is if something happens I have to drive it to the nearest authorized service center which is about an hour and a half drive.

The other choice is buy Vann's extended warranty for $125.00 for 3 years. So really you are only getting one year extra after the manufactures warranty runs out. However Vann's will pay for shipping each way and if they can't fix it - they will give you the total cost of what you paid for your receiver.

If you had a choice what would you do? Just curious because sometimes I will buy an extended warranty and sometimes I won't.

Like was said,IMO the Onkyo 2+2 for $85 is a great deal,

and also you are lucky that you are that close to an authorized service center, there aren't that many of them.

and I will say I live 2 hours from an onkyo service center and I was glad to drive that instead of shipping my 876 when it had a HDMI board issue,

I was happily surprised by the quality of the repair,(it's been working perfect since),and they also shipped it back to me NC.

I do buy ext warr's on certain products,

another experience I just had was with a handheld garmin gps I bought 3.5 years ago from bestbuy, with a 4 year ext warr, well it stopped working properly and they exchanged it for a new comparable garmin for nc,except for the $49 new ext warr I bought,

so basically I got a new $300 gps for $49,

anyway, yes, IMO ext warr's are great from the right stores(walk in or online) on the right products.
