Expert advice needed on my new upgrade subwoofer

Hello guys!

Looking for some expert advice for an UPGRADE


Room would roughly be 10ft × 10ft x 8ft height.

Specifically designed for a cinema room only

I currently own the following (1st setup)
- Yamaha rx-a1040
- KF14 - Dali sub
- Q - acoustic concept 40s

Total cost was between 3-4k GBP

I have been digging into adding a new subwoofer and have been looking into ( PSA S3611 or SVS PB16).

Q1 - would i need to upgrade my reciver ? To get the most out of this size of subwoofer?

Q2 - is there another subwoofer anyone would recommend for around same price tag?

- My main use of the system is for music , house , techno beats with good basslines. My goal is to achieve the best bass i can with adding an extra sub woofer. And (maybe) reciever upgrade if i really need to.

Ok guys , please forward me your expert advice. So i can make the correct purchase this time instead of falling into the trap of listening to clueless sales men!.

First, if you have SubOut on your AVR, you are fine. These are low voltage signals going to the plate amp on the sub. Room EQ may be more an issue.

Yeah, the avr just provides a signal, the amp on your sub does the work, not the avr.

Have you also checked out BK Elec and XTZ subs?

All the usual suspects are always at play: Hsu, SVS, Outlaw, Monolith, Rythmik and PSA.

By all accounts, PSA is a solid company. My main complaint about them is that they do not send their gear out for any 3rd party testing, so you have to take what they give you, and the hearsay of their customers. Not a fan of that: I want to see the measurements if I'm gonna drop coin like that. Also, they use Pro Drivers which have a high Fs (resonant frequency), which requires much more power to reach deep than a driver with lower Fs would require. Deal breaker? Not necessarily, but this leads back to my first point: show me the measurements!

If you are seriously considering spending in that neighborhood, I would add in that you should shop JTR. Arguably much better product, which has been measured, and they are known performers.

If I were to redo my purchase using only OEM products, I would probably look at 2 Monolith 15" subs instead of my Outlaw X-13s.

My recommendation beyond all of this is to understand what is needed from Subs in your room, and how multiple Subs, properly set up in your room will always be better than one single Sub.

How big is your room? Total open room Volume, please: L x W x H. This is important.

That is some tight quarters! You popped up here with two Big-@$$ Subs in your wish list, I was expecting some serious real estate...

Is that roughly 800cu.ft room closed, or is it open to other areas?

If the latter, then I would urge big subs. If the former, I would say look slightly smaller.

I've got 2 Outlaw X13s in my 11x15 foot space, about 2000cu.ft (high sloped ceiling). There is room for me and the Lady, but no movie parties in here! (And I would not give up a Sub to fit another seat, either!) Those Outlaws are overkill in my room, and they deliver!

That was a rough guess estimate . Its maybe more around 14x14 x8. I have a much larger master room. And i have a large dinning room.

But i also got a large double garage and extended basement where i could fit another 2 motors haha.

I am not very experienced with audio. I just know i have an addiction for sound. And i need to get a stronger product . I plan to keep the Dali k14 and add one more sub to provide me with that deeper bass i desire.

What would be the holly grail subwoofer, that i can purchase for between £1500 - £2500 gbp.

My goal is to basically turn my room into "A subwoofer" lol . I am willing to pay the cost to get great deep sound. Could i add noise proof onto the walls . To get better sound?

Yeah I think XTZ would be a good bet. Sell the Dali and invest in two XTZ’s.
One problem is gonna be that square rooms are hard to do great bass in. Freedom of placement will help though.

What is the ideal shape of room for sound ? Is a room with more distance . Better than a room that is square?

Subs and typical in-home rooms have some quirks. Square dims can cause some standing wave challenges (worse in an actual cube-dimensioned room, tho).

While I'm a big proponent of overkill a PB16 Ultra in a less than 1000 cu-ft room is VERY ambitious! I don't know whether to say you're nuts or "YEAH! Go for it!!".

You're at the right place. We're pretty good at spending other folks' money here!
