You spin it around....
Hello everyone, Hopefully this can help others out, as it did me.....read on.
I was listening to some music today, as I do everyday, and my subwoofer was bothering me. Not blooming, or any other annoying noise. It was discernable. I just moved my sub back into the corner from beside the tv, as the TV spot had a HUGE suckout around 60hz. Because my mains get everything from 80 down, this is a no no for me.
I remembered hearing a front ported subwoofer from awhile ago, and loved how it was free from the issues surrounding my subwoofer(other then SPL's and extension
). Im not saying all rear ported subwoofers have these issues, but my subwoofer ENTERED the market in 1997, so it ain't the latest and greatest if you know what I mean.
This gave me the great idea, of turning my subwoofer around. Thusly making it a front ported subwoofer. This isn't the first time I thought of doing this, but now I am desparate, and I can't replace it yet.
After cleaning up the wiring (see picture) I sat down in my "The best listening spot ever" chair. I call it this, because its the ONLY seat in my theater...I had to give up my couch. Its also even better because its my computer chair, it has wheels, so the best spot, and be changed and compared to other spots easily
. The first thing I noticed once a started playing, that the sub seemed quieter. Just to be safe, I but in really bass heavy music. I was using Rock, as that is where I noticed the localization. After upping the volume a tad, and by tad I mean turned the volume up 2 mm's on the dial, it was set.
I must say, I think it fixed my problem. I was much harder to pick out the subwoofer now, even with the driver facing the rear wall. Speaking of the driver. I think that was the problem. Having the driver on the bottom, or not facing the listener helps get rid of localization (speaking out of experience
)
It was funny, while enjoying music in this new configuration, I felt something tickling my leg. Hoping it was not a crane fly
, I looked and saw nothing. Then I realized that this tickle was in beet, a little delayed, with the music. It was the port! It was shooting me. I was suprised, as I was sitting 11 FEET from my subwoofer.
Oh well, guess I have to wear pants when I want to listen to my HT
