The bank cleared both checks because they were from real accounts with enough money to cover them. But the signatures turned out to be forgeries. I'm not sure how it works that the bank can clear a check and then later take the money back, but our owner was fit to be tied.

Is money order better?

If you go and get it cashed there is no way that they can request it back, but you still have to ask yourself "why are they paying me with a money order?"

At least for my bank, they state that the funds aren't permanent until the check is authenticated. So, if I cash a cashiers check from my parents, I need to have enough funds in my account to cover the check in case it turns out to not be good. I don't know what the time period is for authentication.

darien87 Audioholic Spartan Feb 22, 2013 #30 I list stuff on CL every once in a while and this happens pretty much every time. Sucks because you get excited that someone answered your ad. But now I pretty much expect it. Every time I get one of those types of e-mails I just delete them. I just don't get why scammers would bother with things like DVD's. Can you really get rich ripping people off of DVD's?

AcuDefTechGuy Audioholic Jedi Feb 22, 2013 #34 You know, the scam supposedly came from Texas. So which one of you bastards sent them? BTW, I sold my Bose Acoustimass-3 for $50, OSD AMP300 for $100, and the 1st Denon AVR-3310 for $400. I might have a potential buyer for my Denon AVR-990. The 2nd AVR-3310 may probably be next. Hopefully my 2 Crown XLS2500 will have a buyer one day. Last edited: Feb 22, 2013

theJman Audioholic Chief Feb 22, 2013 #37 Yea, I got something similar on CL from a "women" when I advertised a vintage Denon system I was selling. She/he/it wanted me to ship the thing to Kenya to "her son who is off in college". It was supposedly a birthday present she wanted to surprise him with. I think had I been stupid enough to fall for it the surprise would have been on me.

E Eliezer Audiophyte Mar 5, 2013 #39 That's the one they tried on me. It took a while to figure out what they actually wanted. We went back and forth FIVE TIMES! Fortunately I figured it out and told them nothing ... and accepted no money. Nice amp, too.

vecc76 Audioholic Intern Mar 6, 2013 #40 You know what's still a huge issue on Craigslist and eBay is the "white Van Scam" it's amazing that these guys are still selling this crap on eBay and Craigslist. I continue to see on my local Craigslist these "Kirsch" speakers and some of these are selling for 800.00 all the way up to 1500.00 dollars. I hope most buyers are educated enough to research and not purchase this garbage!! I continue to keep flagging this garbage on Craigslist but its just keeps coming back. For every scam that people catch on to, these people always come up with a new one, I guess the old saying will always be the same "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is".
