Here is another suggestion...
Since it is not imperative that your surruonds be voiced matched to get a "workable" 5.1 solution, buy your 3.1 (voice matched) for your front, and then consider these for your surrounds.

Can you point me in the direction of the wiring or cabeling that would be exposed, yet aesthetically pleasing.

A couple of options include:
1) colored speaker wiring that blend into the wall or floor;
2) flat wiring that can be neatly laid under carpet;
3) colored sheathing that goes over speaker wires to match wall colors; or
4) lastly, the wireless speakers that Xsound recommended, bearing in mind, that they do not have the frequency response or build quality of like-priced wired speakers, but they still serve their purpose.

a friend was over for dinner tonight. His suggestion was the under carpet wire routine, and he's good at carpet installs and has the kicking tool. That's beginning to sound like the plan.
