Back to Polaroid, RCA, Philips, and Magnavox. How much more diversified can you get. See where I'm going with this? Yamamamahahahaha will soon be building the HTIB's instead of the real krakerjack because that's what people want. High powered clock radios with 2" drivers and a 4" superwoofer. I bet your Yanni can power those Bose Cubes nicely.

Um, thanks.

Sorry, we can't all afford the $1000 units. I'd love to spend that much on entertainment but my wife would have a fit and my kids wouldn't be eating for about a month. :(

Shadow,

Honestly, you are fine with the Yamaha or Harman Kardon in the $200 - $300 price range. HK is that much better, but it's going to run you closer to $300. If $200 is your budget, go with the Yamaha over the Onkyo. Still a very good unit. Just make sure you don't buy power hungry speakers.

The Yamaha 5740 is on for $199.88 at JR.com and that way you get to go to 6.1 and they are an authorized dealer, and they actually have the 5830, the 5730 replacement for well under $200 as well. Also at their site you can get a refurbished Onkyo 502 with full warrany through Onkyo for $149.00. You can get a refurbished Denon 485S from Dakmart with a one year warranty for $204.98 (sorry I know I'm breaking your budget a bit) by clicking here:Denon @ Dakmart . I wouldn't suggest that you get the entry level Pioneer, but if you shop around you may be able to get up into the 814 range for pretty close to $200, probably a bit over though. Hope this gives a bit of a starting point. (the cheapest I could find an authorized Harman 135 was $279). Good luck with the purchase.

Onkyo 502

Just thought I'd follow up the comments about the entry level Onkyos. The 502 can't be that bad if Audioholics recommend $1000 system has spec'ed this unit. I trust whoever did that review.

Audioholics $1000 Recommended Home Theater System

I ended up buying this receiver and am very happy with it use it 80/20 movies to music. The 6.1 is great. I wish more movies would come out in this format.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi, sorry to post again but I just thought of this. Harman has an authorized ebay store so I looked it up. You may find a good deal on a 135 or the like. Here's one that's ending in less than 5 hrs. Harman avr230 also a Avr135 ending in 7hrs. Just figured it may be worth it to you to check it out.

Input/Outputs

I'll have to watch HKs ebay store. Thanks.

Now, as I'm looking at these receivers, even if they are cheap ;), should I be concerned with how many inputs and outputs the receiver has and of what type?

At this point all I have to hook up to it is a combo-DVD/VCR, but I intend on getting a universal DVD player sometime in the future, probably the Pioneer DV-578A. My TV is a flatscreen analog tube TV.

One of the receivers I'm looking at doesn't have S-Video, Component-video or HDTV-compatible inputs.

Should I worry about not having these inputs?

Also, I've noticed, many of these entry level recievers have basic surround modes and don't have DD EX, DTS-ES, and Pro Logic IIx. Will I really miss any of these? (The receiver above that doesn't have the listed inputs has the DD EX and DTS-ES, but not the Pro Logic IIx).

Are all these inputs, outputs and surround modes necessary? I've looked up their definitions, but that doesn't really help me understand if they are needed.

And it would appear that of all the receivers close to my budget, the Pioneer 814 seems to be the most versatile in this regard, having more inputs, outputs and surround modes than any other receiver in it's price point.

The 230 doesn't have PLIIx but the 135 does. Wether or not you would miss different surround formats will give rise to debate. Most receivers have their own form of spreading out 2 channel formats into 5 or more. Harmans I believe is Logic7 &, and seems to be very well liked by Harman owners for the most part. If you can scoop that 135 for under $200 (or a little over) go for it, it's the best deal you'll get in that pricerange. It does all you want right now and can easily handel your near future upgrades.

Even at just 40 watts?

Well, my stereo receiver gets 45 watts and it gets plenty loud enough with efficient speakers, so I guess.

I do like the looks of HKs.

I think logic 7 is like Denons 5ch stereo and PLIIx is more like 5.1,i think.
