Entry Level Receiver

Are you guys sick of my questions yet? ;)

I'm looking for an entry level receiver (and unfortunately there is little info on these), under $200 is my budget.

Does anyone have any opinion on the following?

Denon AVR-485s
Kenwood VR-806
Onkyo TX-SR502
Pioneer VSX-D514
Sherwood RD-7500
Sony STR-DE597
Yamaha HTR-5730

Or at this price point are they all pretty similar and I'll be happy (or unhappy) no matter which on I choose?

At this point I have no home theater whatsoever. I'm just starting out with plans to upgrade much later as my budget (and wife) dictate.

Thanks

The yam is a great little receiver, and you can get it cheap, i've seen it for $160 online.

EDIT:

Actually that receiver, 3 BICdv62clr's, 2 dv62si's, and the venturi1020 sub, you can get all of it together for under $800. and it will sound great.

I have BIC sub and love it! Sorry to hijack the thread but you recommend 3 center channel speakers?

Yes, Get some small speaker stands and put each of the 62s on their side, they arent huge and look nice too, so the wife won't get too upset.

Of those listed I'd most likely buy the Onkyo, but I thought it was a $300 model. I'd also look to see if you could get a Panasonic receiver with the digital switching amps (The XR series)

Lower end Sony's (well most Sony's actually) have average sound at best and do VERY poorly on center channels and DTS in general. I would only buy one for a parent who already had a Sony TV and DVD player and wanted to make a single remote easy to use.

The Yamaha 5740 (one step up from yours, normally about $ 210) is an excellent piece of small equipment in terms of sound quality. It's not much help for video switching but it does add the sixth channel if you ever want to step up to the ES encoded disks and lip synch delay to match up to a high-end TV..

The receivers that stick out are the Onkyo & Yamaha at this price range. You would be fine with either one.
I believe that the Kenwood is getting out of Home Audio, some of the other members may have more info on that.
Sony is not in the running.
I have not heard any of the lower end Pioneers or Sherwoods.

I HATE entry level Onkyo's. Talk about a paperweight. Who designed the front of the unit - KLH?

I agree, those things are junk. They are even worse than those junk Pioneer units.

They do compare with the new Poloroid and Magnavox receivers though, and those are BIG name vendors. I think you can even get free plastic speakers with some of them - in one box! And, best of all, the new wiring is awesome - 24 ga. wire so you can hide it ON THE CARPET.

They come with a complimentary clapper, to replace the remote.

I think KLH has a 1000w x 5 for like $89.66 at war mart.

We have a 24hr one down the street, I think I need one of them!

Yeah, they are up there with Philips, Norcent, GE, and RCA for great all in one packages. They can all power a full 100' string of xmas lights for 30 minutes without clipping.
