The California Energy Commission votes 5-0 in favor of the nation's first efficiency regulations for televisions of up to 58 inches sold in the state. The stricter rules take effect Jan. 1, 2011.

The CEC is not an elected official. The Sierra Club is not an elected official. This Forum I realize is not for the intent of political comments or opinions. But for the Audiophiles that love their toys.......it will impact all of us. They already have on the TV's an Energy Star approval tag in the corner of all appliances including the Plasmas. My Brand New 50" Panasonic "G" series has one. It sounds like they keep lowering the bar. I heard about this a week ago that California was going to impose something like this. Which swayed my decision TO BUY A PLASMA !!! Its going to get to the point that we can only watch TV at and between certain hours of the day. Denmark, A friend of mine told me last night...the citizens have to pay a TV tax to watch TV to cover intances like this. Why not just build new power plants.

I think Germany has a TV tax if I remember right, so that could be where we are headed. At least California. I don't plan on becoming a resident, so I'm good for at least another 20 years in KS, where we like life a little slower.

TV taxes are generally used to pay for state funded programming. I could also see them used to pay for regulatory agencies (it would make sense to me to fund the FCC by taxing televisions).

I don't believe, but don't know for sure, that anyone has used a TV tax in a punitive manner (like Europe taxes gas or congestion).

But yes, I think this is the wrong forum for this thread which is, really, a political one.

Everyone who moans over the attempt to regulate TV power consumption overlooks the past successful effort at limiting power use by other home appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, and air conditioners. If it worked for them, why can't it work for TVs?

Similarly, if you are old enough to remember the late 60s or early 70s when cars were first required to meet emissions controls, a lot of people complained how it would ruin cars forever. It didn't, but it did stimulate the development of fuel injectors to replace carburetors and electronic ignition to replace those old distributors.

Wired and a few other publications have written articles on why 2 years (and then 4 years) from now, this will all be a moot point because every TV under 58 inches that is sold will already perform to the specifications of the new law. Additionally, most TVs already meet these requirements, and most of the ones that dont (plasmas) wont be on the market in two years anyway.
