Energy Take Classics = blown w/ Onkyo Receiver

Hey, I posted in the receiver forum but my problem is more related to the speakers so hopefully someone here can help me out...

My setup: Onkyo 607, Energy Take Classic 5.1, Monster Powercenter

About a month ago i had a party playing the music really loud and my powercenter shut down everything, maybe because it was getting hot... but the next day i realize that one of my energy speakers was blown, sent it back and they sent me a new one...

Now today, same scenario only worse, playing the music last night, almost at max volume, everything was fine, but now today seems as if 2 of my energy speakers are blown and the surround is not even putting out any sound...

Please help... Do you think that the receiver is cranking out too much power for the speakers causing them to blow? and i need to upgrade my speakers??

The overpower after playing for a while at high volume, everything is well ventilated, do you think i need to put a small fan over the receiver??

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

To be honest it sounds like you are trying to get more then your set up will give you. Both times you said you were playing at near max volume so to me that says you are creating more distortion then the speakers can handle and they blow. I would just be more realistic as to what your sytem can do and if it's not enough then it's time to upgrade. Just my 2 cents.:)

Small speakers can only move so much air.

They are good little speakers but they do have their limits on how loud they can/should be played.

Likewise, it's also possible thy you were driving the amp into clipping, which can send gobs of distorted square waves to the speakers, which can also kill them.

I'm surprised that nobody heard the sounds of distress from the system before the event occurred.

Rule # 1 in audio: If something sounds bad, turn it down NOW!

It sounds like you have a problem with being able to control the volume.

I use to have the same system, 607+ Energy Take 5s. After breaking them in (even the manual says 50 hours min before playing at a loud volume) I did experiment a bit with the volume.

They play very well at reasonable volume (daily music, TV) but when you go any higher they lose notable amounts of clarity and get harsh. I assume this is the speaker hitting it's limits in output so I stopped there. Another thing to note is your crossover, in a small room they can reach about 100 hz, medium 120 hz, large I don't know. If you cross them over too low in a large room with the volume cranked that could do it too.

In short - find where the speakers start getting harsh on the volume dial, back it off a few, then go into settings and set a volume limit to that #.
