After much hype, doubts and many hours of deep thoughts and reserach; I pulled the trigger on the EMP impression 5.0 package. Well, that was last week. Today, Mr Fed Ex came and delivered. I must tell you all that I had my doubts on the purchase since I have never bought speakers without a few auditions. However, I am sooooo glad that I did. These speakers are not only a beauty to have on your living room, but they also sound great. Let me say, they came in on time, the boxes were in perfect condition, the speakers came wrapped up in a soft cloth, and very well protected. Now lets get on the speakers themselves. The mids and highs are excellent, and the bass is tight even without the sub. I have not been able to done much with them tonight, but I have played a few CDs to check things out; Michael Buble, Daughtry, Metallica, and Pink Floyd. So far everything sounded awesome. I am very satisfied. At this moment I amusing the pure direct mode on my rx-v1700 to see how the towers handle the bass without the sub, so far I am very impressed. I will have everything adjusted by tomorrow. I will run YPAO to see if things get any better, if not I will run on straight mode for movies and pure direct for music. Anyway, if any of you are having second thoughts on this speakers please do not think twice and take advantage of the price. They not only look great but they also sound great. I must also say that this is my first purchase at the Audioholics store and everything went great.

I will try to update more later or as soon as I have more data. One question???? Should I set the towers to large or small and should I cross over at 80?? Please advise.

I've got a yamaha 1800 powering mine and manually set the xover at 80 before I ran ypao. 80 sounded best to my ears. If I went higher I thought the bass got just a touch overwhelming, but maybe I just needed to turn my sub down a little :) After I ran ypao i did think it evened the sound out and made them sound even better although ypao seemed to think that my xover should be set at 160hz, WTF. I dropped it back to 80hz. If you run ypao you can still do all the manual setup afterwards on things you don't like. I do it mostly for the auto distances and the EQ. Also, I left them set to large with LFE going to both the towers and the sub at the same time.

I started with just the towers, but I think i'm adding the center today! Probly going with some smaller on walls for surrounds from tsc like gene suggested, wife was NOT excited about "big" bookshelves hanging off the wall in the middle of the living room.

One thing I've been very pleased with as well has been my 1800. I had klipsch speakers before and they're pretty easy to drive. I didn't really appreciate the 1800 till my buddy bought my klipsch and put em on a cheapo sony POS. The yamaha sounds SO much better. He bought the sony to my house to listen to both sets of speakers, he liked the klipsch more just cause that puny sony couldn't hardly fill my big living room with sound when pushing the EMP's!

Yes "small"
Yes "80hz"

Did you get the black or red burl? I'm still waiting for somebody to post pictures of the black.

I know i've seen someone around in one of the threads that has 3 black towers in front. He's got pics somewhere, but I couldn't find em this morning. The black looks pretty good too, but I went red cause the wife wanted em to match the couch, which they do a good job of if its not super bright in the room.

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on these, but my receiver is the onkyo tx-sr304, giving 65 watts total into 8 ohms, so do you think these'll sound bad because of the lower power rating, or would an amplifier be necessary such as the xpa-2 from emotiva?? Moreover, does the speaker have to be putting out at least 50 watts when being played? Congrats on your purchase.

-Thanks.

Inner Workings

Here are some pics of the inner workings. Sorry about the X-Over it was so tight with the wiring that I couldn't even pull it out any further.

You should be ok in a small to medium sized room but if you desire very loud listening levels, you should consider an amp from Emotiva whom IMO offer the best bang for the buck. Make sure your receiver has preamp outs if you go that route otherwise you may need to upgrade.

Most of the time your amplifier is idling at around 1-3 watts per speaker when listening at normal levels. Its the dynamics and peaks and high sustained listening levels that require more power.

Nice pics. Make sure you place those gaskets back on the woofers before putting them back into the cabinet.

There is one thing I have been wondering that I don't recall seeing mentioned. Do the towers come with spikes, or do you have to provide your own?

Hello everyone! New here to the forums :). Just got this EMP system and am learning everyday with them, got the new Onkyo HT-RC160 to match with them and so far I am very pleased.

Got one MINOR problem tho - in moving my old POS HTOB speaker stands out I hit one of the towers in the back, causing a small chip. I have the red burl finish. Now, its not very noticeable and it is on the back so no one would see it - but I know its there and I'm bugged by such things lol. I would like to touch it up but am lost as to what I would use. I've googled red burl touch up paint and all that and haven't found anything. Its a very small chip. Any suggestions?

Do you have the piece that broke off? If so, you could use a touch of wood glue to get it back on. Otherwise, I'd try put a dab of wood filler on it, and get a local hardware store to make up a small can of glossy paint to touch it up.

Post a pic here so others can see.

Naw, its just a paint chip. I wonder what color of glossy paint I would need for this - I'll take your suggestion and head by a hardware store after work. :)
