Gene (and others),
I'm a fan of beryllium tweeters, but I've never seen beryllium used for mid drivers. Is this common, or is EMP doing something "out of the box" with this?
Thanks!
This is NOT common and its quite expensive. I believe TAD also uses this cone material. It is lighter than aluminum so it potentially has advantages. I believe the new Status Acoustics stuff RBH will be making in the future will be using the very same cones.

Regardless of how good/bad the amp is with this system, the speaker deal is simply ridiculous at this price. I am excited to hear them when they show up.

Killer!

they are more like 41-SE/Rs as they use a 4" woof instead of a 6" found on the 61-SE/R. Insane deal even without the amp. I want a pair to use as computer speakers :)
Definitely a 41-SE/R with a different cone, they seem to be using the same tweets as the Signature series too. However, as you guys have auditioned the Signatures before, I am sure you'll agree that tRBH's Signature Series aluminum cones are pretty hard to beat. I have a feeling this will sound more like the MC series (MC-4C) and use the higher end cabinet and tweet of the Signature 44-SE. To be more trendy, I see it as a 'hybrid' MC-4C.

Mind you, for THAT price including a tube amp, it's a VERY hard package to turn down (even for an MC-4C), unless you don't live in the USA and have to pay intense duty or brokerage on top of the exchange. :(

Actually these speakers use the identical driver to the 41-SE but with the improved cone material. I believe the tweeter may be slightly different but comparible. They should compete and in some areas exceed the performance of the 41-SE Signature product. Very exciting especially considering the price.

A sweet deal! :D I still don't see how RBH is making any money off the EMP products.

They aren't but they are trying to penetrate the market by basically selling at cost to create buzz until users start spreading the word.

I fear this may backfire by having people devalue the product b/c they are inexpensive. We shall see.

I had been planning on getting an AudioEngine, but this is too interesting. I'm in for one.
Any idea about where the Amp came from?
Does EMP/RBH have an electronics division or association with another manufacturer?

As far as I know it was a joint effort with the owner of RBH and his love of tubes, with another manufacturer.

Looks like we may be too late. It came up as "back ordered" when trying to order today. :(:(

I called EMP. They had two left this AM (I can account for one of those!).
Expecting more late October (didn't mention price change).

ANY IDEA WHAT MANUFACTURER?
I emailed and asked EMP about that.

Their response was worded very politely, but the bottom line is they "ain't sayin!"

That is really what you should expect. For example here is a fictitious scenario:

Say Roger B Hassing happened to meet and befriend Frank Van Alstine, Frank becomes intrigued with designing a budget amp (after all, he never gets to in his real life:)). Then Roger finds some unheralded company in China to produce it.
Now, Frank doesn't want his name on it, because he has no control over the manufacturing quality and it may erode his reputation. Roger doesn't want the manufacturer's name to be known because they are unknown or they may have problems and he might switch production to another facility (which is not something you would want to advertise if you can catch the problems internally and make the switch smoothly).

Do you know who does EMP's subwoofer amps? They may be the same company as makes this tube amp.

I got an email back from EMP about using the line out to hook up the subwoofer via stereo to RCA cable instead of using speaker wire and this is what they said
"I was going to test the control to see whether it was variable or not but could not find the proper cable to connect it to our subwoofer.

I can't remember if the line out is variable with the volume control. If it is it will work fine, if not it will still work but the output will not change with the volume control."

anyway, I should be getting my speakers in tomorrow maybe and cabling the next day or so or at least by friday.

The sub came in today though!

Just got my speakers and amp, they came boxed in RBH boxes with RBH factory sealed tape. the speakers were double boxed with stirafoam on the corners outside of the inside box. the amp had LOTS of foam surrounding it in it's box. I took lots of pictures. I will upload them tomorrow and give listening impressions. These bookshelves are atleast 4 times the size and weight of the logitech satillites im using right now.

Holy crap this system is awesome. I paired with my svs pc12-nsd, and it is monsterous. 1000x better than my logitech z5500 and about 4x the cost so I would expect it to be better :D With a good sub this is one serious 2.1 system. My jaw is on the ground. Pictures and listening material to follow.

Edit:
I hooked it up as such: 1/8" to 1/8" cable from the laptop to the aux input on the amp, then stereo to RCA from the "line out" jack on the amp to the low level R and L RCA inputs on the sub. it works like a charm, no need to use speaker cable to hook up the sub to the amp. The sub took me by suprise, I played Bass Testers - Feel the Bass on youtube and the sub proceeded to shake and rattle all three doors, the lights on the ceiling, and the frames on the walls. Ive never felt that kind of bass before, it was intense. The speakers don't seem to have limits even when played to extreme nearly-ear-splitting spl's and the sub is playing superfast double bass kicks without missing one of them. This really is 2.1 stereo nirvana. Well worth the price of admission.

Looking forward to your write-up!
How did you end up connecting the subwoofer - line-level or speaker-level?
LOL - that sure looks like a honkin' big lot of subwoofer for that lil' mini-system!:D:cool:
Cheers,
Kurt

I got my system today. Biting my nails to hook it up but I got to finish this Denon DVD-A1UDCI review first.

Try placing those speakers on a good pair of stands instead of your desktop. I expect the will sonically disappear.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adV8-_hgL4g Play this song when you hook yours up. this guitarist really tests the tweeters for about 9 straight minutes. :D :D :D What can I use as stands? I do get better clarity when I lean back in my chair, so I do suppose they should be raised up 3-5 inches to be perfect in my normal sitting position.

thanks for the link.

It's not just tweeter level. Placing them on stands away from a back wall and display monitor will all them to properly image b/c of better off axis response. I plan on testing in both venues in my review. I at least suggest you try it as well just to see how "Audiophile" this system really is.

Exactly how high should they be? and how far off the walls should they be? Mine are about 8-9" from the wall.
