So I'm looking at the new Emotiva XPA Two,it's rated at 300x2 at 8ohm. I know it's rated for more than my HSU Research HB-1s are rated for(250) but is it really TOO much? It's just for a simple 2.1 setup and would never be blasted at full tilt. Opinions greatly appreciated!

You're kidding, right?
1) Asking an Audioholic if an amp has too much power is like asking a Ferrari club if a Ferrari has too much power.

2) Keep in mind, ideally you like to operate well below the max capability of your equipment. So no, it is not too much power... (assuming you have the sense not to operate it wide open). I like the Denon feature that lets you limit max volume... just in case that Ferrari nut shows up.

I was thinking that, but I've never knowingly overpowered a speaker so I wasn't sure if sending 50wpc more than the speakers rating would smoke voicecoils. Lol

Not at all, the speaker is only going to draw what you ask of it, so as stated above, don't go nutz and you'll be just fine.

I think you should upgrade your speakers before buying an amp like that.

Get new speakers....the amp is total overkill.

Too much is just enough, but way, way too much is wasteful if you never use it, and potentially risky (to speakers, hearing, or both) if you do. So it's safe for adults, and probably not so safe for teenagers, or drunkards, or worse, teenage drunkards.

How many subs are you running? Consider using the money for additional subs rather than an overkill amplifier.

If your speakers are rated for 250 watts, then the 300 watt amp will be fine and not overkill, in my opinion. For most of the time, depending on how big your room is and how loud you listen to your music, you may reach 30 watts which is very loud. You may reach even more watts quickly depending on the type of music you are listening to. If you listen loud and are hitting peaks that require lots of wattage, your speakers will be happy to have the extra headroom with the 300 watt amp.

I have an Mcintosh 300 X2 amp with the power guard and my speakers are rated at 200 watts @ 8 ohm. dips down to 6 ohm. I've cranked it close to 0db on my AVR and I have never had the power guard kick in on my amp. I did notice that since I've gotten my amp, the music is clearer at high volume levels.

That's my opinion but what do I know.

Chances are that you won't be hitting 250 watts when listening to music or HT. Again, if your room is large then you may.
