Emotiva Amp + Line Conditioner?

Emotiva in their literature and over the phone states that their Amps, specifically the XPA-2 has its own line conditioner and surge protector built in and it should be connected directly to the wall.

Is this information correct, or would I be better off plugging my Amp into my Panamax line cleaner? I would think the Panamax would do a better job cleaning the power then the Amp, but wanted to get some opinions.

Also, can anyone recommend some other good sites to purchase Power Cables from other than Monoprice? If I hook up to my Panamax Line Cleaner, I need a 14 gauge shielded power cord that's 8+ feet.

Thanks...

Is it correct? Who am I to argue with the manufacturer? I figure if they are going to warranty their products based on the recommendation to their clients to plug the amps directly into a wall outlet, then maybe that's the way to go.

On the flip side, I have mine plugged into my line conditioner. I don't have much trust of them (for reasons noted elsewhere). Lonnie stated that the hum in my IPS was due to it not being plugged directly into the wall, but plugging it into the wall didn't help, so I went back to having it plugged into the line conditioner. I haven't run into any performance issues, and I've never seen the current draw go near 15 amps, so I don't think the line conditioner is hurting anything. My point is that I think it's up to your personal preference.

Do you normally have problems with the power in your area that it needs conditioning? I would suggest that a surge protector is more then adequate....unless you have documented issues with power fluctuations or spikes.... but it seems if your asking, then you probably haven't experienced much in the way of issues.

Nitin,

You hi-jacking my thread to get back at me for doing it to you?? :D

I use a Panamax I bought new on Ebay for 1/2 of the retail price. It's been great for the last 2 years.

Any recommendations guys for another web site to buy Power Cables? Monoprice doesn't have the cable I need...

Try B&H Photovideo if you can't find it on Monoprice.

www.bhphotovideo.com

They have a ton of stuff, have been around a long time, and have great customer service.

Almost all products are tested by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to run safe within a certain electrical range. So an amp can have a small transducer inside that will help combat some surges, but not all of them. You would be better off to buy a seperate surge protector to add to the protection. Not only will you most likely not need it, ever, but for peace of mind and the fact that anything connected to the outboard protector is insured, where as your amp plugged directly into the wall has no such insurance coverage. i also find that by using a good surge protecor that it helps eliminate almost all ground loop hums that sometimes occur when an amp is just plugged directly into a wall.

But if someone already has a good line cleaner, wouldn't this be a better route...?

Line Conditioner

My curiosity got the better of me and I purchased a PS Audio Quintet and noticed no difference in sound quality when plugging in a XPA-2 in the unit vs the wall. And that's from someone hoping it would make a difference.

Yup! I think a surge protector will make more sense in my case. Will get one asap.

Hey Gregg! Good to hear from you (Even if that is a complain :D). I am outta this thread buddy. Roll this baby your way :)

I was looking for the conditioner for this case only, but if there is no audible distinction, I will stick to a surge protector only :)

Here are two that I have been looking at:

Furman 1800 PF R $499

Furman PL Plus Series II $120

That would be my hi/low. The Panamax looks nice but a bit 'gimmicky'.

Furman is good stuff! Actually, same company...Panamax and Furman both have lower end hardware..and kind of cross over just below the high end stuff..both run up to several hundred dollars..but the Furman has models over $2K for the big boys...plus their pro line for commercial setups.

Hey, gregg!! ..been a while.. how do you like your AVR350?

I just got an email back from Oppo..I asked them for advice on their new BD player.. and the best way to set it up for SACD, DVD-A and lossless BD tracks.
They said leaving the +10 db bass boost in the Arcam analog setup and doing the bass management in the player should work fine for all multi-channel media.

So I am jumping at it soon. :)

Someone posted some info on here for those who got to buy in early on the Oppo...that was a no-no until they were released for public consumption. For those with an early option, they know about it.. for the rest of you, I would say stay cool! It should get released very soon!
Anyway, enjoy! Don't use an UPS with that good amp..you'll choke it..use an open conditioner with lots of reserve, like mine ;)

True! It would be like buying a small power company. :)
