Speakers are normally sold in pairs, but occasionally they're listed singly. While they're not my idea of a great speaker, the CV's certainly will belt our rock with gusto. They're very sensitive and can be driven to wall-shaking, ear-splitting levels with a very modest amp.

Many have also said the CV Classics respond well to some minor mods. The cabinets are not very well braced and don't have much fill. I've read that removing the woofs and gluing in some dowels, along with a few sheets of Black Hole 5, works wonders for their sound.

Bear in mind shipping on the CVs is gonna be pretty high. But you may be able to get a good deal on them locally.

For my money, if I had $300 to spend on speakers and could go no higher, I'd opt for a set of the best bookshelf types I could find, new or used. Audiogon is a great place to find superb deals on gently used gear. My personal choice would be whatever Monitor Audio speakers I could get for that price, probably Bronze B2's or the older tower Bronze 3's. But that's just my personal preference. A set of tower Athena F2's could probably be found used for pretty close to that price, too. They offer a lot of sound for the money, as well as good bass.

If you go the bookshelf route you'll probably want to add a sub to really enjoy rock, but in a smallish dorm room they'll get you buy. You can add the sub later as budget permits.
