How do I get Hi resolution sound from my Amazon Fire tv with eARC to my old Sony HDMI receiver?I believe I am getting only Arc quality sound now through my HDMI cables

That receiver only supports ARC, so if you want eARC you need a new receiver. There is no workaround for this.

I got a device that suppoedly took the audio from eARC and sent the audio only. to my receiver,but it was a cheap Chinese device that stopped working after a couple of months.I have hoped and waited for a quality device from a good brand,but have heard nothing.Is it possible to extract the eARC audio and send it to a receiver?

Not as far as I know. I have never heard of doing that, but I did find a unit that does it.

That looks like your only option, other than updating your receiver. One problem I see if that you may well have latency issues, and have trouble getting picture and audio to synchronize.

Without eARC, lossless multichannel signals will exceed the bandwidth limitations of ARC. This is not an issue concerning lossy signals like Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS. Smart TV service apps will stream lossy DD and DD+ signals so no issue there.

Is there a 4K blu-ray player, PS5 or XBOX Series X/S connected to the TV here? They will require eARC support in both the TV and receiver to pass lossless multichannel PCM, Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD MA as you already know and a device such as the one @TLS Guy linked will be required to get lossless multichannel audio from the TV to the receiver.

Yes,I see I am doomed to getting an eARC receiver. There still are no quality eARC extractors and the latency problem. Thanks for your answers.I try to be an audio spartan ,myself.

What lossless audio goes thru your tv particularly?

i thought the audio coming from the tv would be lossless if it came from eARC.i do have a blu ray player but I can get by with ARC if it is just for that.

I was wondering just like luvinthehd was...if you are using just the apps on the tv as your source, you aren't getting any HD audio in the first place. EARC doesn't matter in your case.
Streamers must pay for their insolence !

Not from streaming services, maybe a bluray player....otoh it's really not that critical in any case.

ps I'd just plug the bluray player into the avr, tho.

If it is a 1080p blu-ray player, not a 4K/UHD blu-ray player, you will lose nothing concerning audio or video by connecting it to the Sony STR-DH550. You will lose lossless multichannel audio when connecting it to the TV and using ARC to get audio back to the Sony. Antenna TV broadcasts are lossy but many are DD 5.1. Make sure the TV is set to output Dolby Digital, not PCM, to enjoy DD 5.1 from the TV tuner and Smart apps over ARC.

The only advantage I got in some of my tv's with OTA audio was multich could be passed by ARC....but not streaming (older plasma tvs). You're quite fine with lossy multich audio, tho. What is your speaker setup?
