DVI to HDMI hook up confusion

It seems like it should be less complicated. I have a Yamaha 1600 with HDMI, a JVC G886 with HDMI and a Motorola DVR from Media Com cable company which has a DVI. The DVR has a DVI output which I run to the Yamaha 1600 HDMI input. Then I run a HDMI output from the Yamaha 1600 to the JVC 886 TV HDMI input. This is my video setup. I have the proper HDMI cables and the correct DVI / HDMI cable.
For audio, I run a Coaxial Digitial from the DVR SPDIF output to the Yamaha Digital input. So far, nothing works. I called the cable company to see what settings I need to use on their DVR and it was like a blank on the other end. I am not even sure anymore if I understand what settings to use on the TV as I am begining to get real confused and dont know what I am doing. I really could use some help.

Couple things to check... First, your cable box will only send video out DVI, so you're good there. Youhave to likely enable DVI output in the setup menu (look on the remote).

Also - just because your cable box has a DVI output, doesn't mean it's active. Look over at AVS Forums for you local HDTV/cable company and see if you can post a question about your particular model.

As far as everything else, select that input and then go into the Yamaha GUI and make sure you have HDMI correctly set up and that the particular input you are using is pulling audio from the digital coax...

You are correct about your question...is DVI active. I just got an update from Media Com and they said they are sorry but DVI and HDMI outputs on their DVR's are not active, and they are working on a unit that will support various outputs.

What a shame that people go through what they do with good equipment and cabling to learn it will not work. I also had Media Com come out twice with Cable Cards and they were unable to get one to work. Again unacceptable...hence the DVR.
My next question is, if I use component out video from the DVR to the A/V receiver, can I still run HDMI from the receiver to the TV. I realize that I probably need to run seperate audio. Thanks for your help
