What is the best way to rip a DVD? What's the best way to the watch the ripped DVD on my display, not my computer? If this is done can you retain the original audio formats?

Assuming you're talking about non-copyrighted DVDs...

For Windows, DVDShrink will rip and optionally compress them. You can select the desired audio and video tracks. There's also something called ripit4me that comes in handy if the DVD is scratched, or otherwise un-rippable in DVDShrink.

once you ripped the dvd, you will need to burn it to a disc to play it on your display, unless your display is hooked to the pc you ripped the original disc to... and yes, you can retain all the original audio formats and subtitles.
