DVD quality at different price points

Hi,

Please excuse this very basic question but looking at descriptions of a Sony DVD player DVPNS75H at a 149.00 (CDN) price point vs. a Pioneer DV46AV at a 400.00 (CDN) price point I am trying to understand if the price difference is worth it. Both offer HDMI and 1080i upconversion - so, what is the Pioneer giving me in quality that the Sony is not given that the Pioneer is more than double the price.

Thanks,
Dean

Check out the Oppo 971. I have one and it's fantastic. It's consistently rated as one of, if not the, highest performing upconverting DVD player on the market.

Best thing about it? It's only $199US.

Ordered my Oppo 981 the other day.....can't wait to see the improvement over my old $50 DVD player! The 981 is also a thought if you're into SACD or DVD-A formats as it will handle those via the HDMI to your receiver. Also will upconvert to 1080p if you're heading that way in the near future for $50 over the 971.

I'm taking a wild guess here but the Pioneer probably uses higher quality parts and the difference might not be so much in the video portion it might be in the audio, better DAC's etc,i just compared Yamaha's dvd-s 1700 and 2700 they look alike but the 2700 costs twice as much and is almost twice as heavy.

I have been looking at these two myself. Seems the only documented differance I can see between these two are the additional DACs for audio play back on the 2700. It is also organized differently inside to ensure no interference for sound.

Since I am 75% movies and 25% CD, I believe I may go with the 1700.

Seems the biggest difference I can see at various price points are the DACs, the amount of upconversion (1080i vs 1080P) and SACD.

You are correct about the 2700 it's all about audio...when conected throught it's analog output of course.
