We have a combination DVD/VHS machine that plays fine for 2/3 of a movie (any movie or CD) then it begins to hang just a bit. Eventually it gets stuck and can't go forward. If you try and access later channels through the scene selection, it still does the same thing. Weird thing is, this isn't the only machine we have had do this, it's the 3rd or 4th. Any insight on what it could be.

This machine is a toshiba. All of the others have been pretty much budget machines (apex, coby, that type). just curious.

Since this happens with everything, it sounds like the lens mechanism is sticking, tracks are not parallel perhaps, preventing easy movement. Or, whatever it slides on, sealed bearings/bushings are dry or defective.

It seems that this lens assembly may be used by many others hence the similar problems.

At least this is what it seems to me.

I wonder if this an error of the laser in reading the second layer of the DVD. But at the same time, it's having difficulties with CD's as well. How old are all of the DVD players you have been using? Does it hang when using VHS, or DVD only?
