I have a question.

If your playing a CD through a DVD player that is connected to a receiver digitally (through coaxial, as mine is). Are you listening to the origional Digital source? Since its not converting to Analog.

Thanks

The signal is sent as a pulse code modulation (PCM) signal through the digital coaxial cable from the DVD player to the receiver. The receiver then runs this PCM signal through a digital to analog converter (DAC).

If you use the analog phono outputs on your DVD player instead of the digital coaxial, the PCM signal is decoded by the DAC in the DVD player, not the DAC in your receiver.

PCM is digital, so yes you will be getting a digital signal from the dvd player to the receiver if you use an optical or coaxial digital connection.

So...its not digital, or is it? :p
Well, to be passed via a digital connection, it has to be a digital signal... Everything you send via this connection will be a digital signal, though what type of stream is passed depends on what you are playing; CD, DVD, etc...
