Here's the problem.
Often at work we get DVDs from contractors. These often contain movies of a ship design. When we get these, we (I) need to go off to conference room to view it.
Now the situation.
Now we just got these great looking Samsung Syncmaster 910T monitors. The monitor has both the standard VGA input and a DVI-D input. I would like to get a cheap DVD player to sit here on my desk to play these contractor provided DVDs. Do I need to get one of those converters like this:

or can I just get by with an adapter cable like this:

Since this is work, and I won't be able to watch movies (honestly - really) I would like to do this as cheaply as possible. I realize I can get a DVD player with HDMI output and get a cable that will go from HDMI to DVI-D and spend less than $200 (player and cable), whereas the component to VGA could cost upwards of $350 (player, converter, and cable), while the cheapest option - as little as $50 would be a player and component to VGA cable.
I've checked all the threads and other material here at AH to no avail, now I need input from you guys. PS - Samsung was totally useless on this matter.
PSS - I do plan on using said system to listen to CD via Sennheiser HD650 cans powered by a Chinese tube amp (someone left it behind when they moved on to greener pastures - says alot about this amp, doesn't it.)
