Having difficulty completing the setup of all my new holiday toys:

Samsung 4266 DLP HDTV
Yamaha RX-V657
Toshiba SD-3980 DVD Player
Scientific Atlanta 8300HD Cablebox

All is well except 2 issues, one is a big deal to me and the other is not. First, my "B" speaker setup seems incorrect(small deal). I am unaware how to separate into Zone 1 and Zone 2 so am just trying to use "B" for my pool speakers. However, I cannot get my center channel or surround speakers to not play alongside without using the "straight effects" button on my receiver.

My real issue is DVD playback. I have tried two different connections to no avail. First, I went DVD direct to TV via component cables while directing sound to receiver via coax. Got sound but no picture. Then, I tried component cables to receiver and component out to TV. Same thing, sound but no picture(although I did gain OSD for receiver so I am certain my connection is good).

Suggestions??

I had the same problem. Your receiver should have the manual. If not, post a pic of the back of your receiver and your dvd, it would help. You have to connect a/v through your receiver then from the receiver to your tv. I will scan the manual for my receiver once i get to the office. Hopefully it will help or may be others in the mean time will be able to help you more than i do.
I found the back of your receiver of the internet. Try connecting the video/s-video out from your DVD, audio out from your dvd to audio in to your receiver (the top from the inputs on your receiver/DVD in). Connect the video/s-video output from your receiver (bottom part listed as monitor out) to your video/s-video input of your tv. I hope it works.

B speakers
The B speakers play the front left and right channels only and they will play the same thing that the A speakers play, so as you've discovered, if you are using a processing mode that uses more than 2 channels, the B speakers will play the front channels and all the other speakers will play too.

Component connections
Connections sound right. You may have to assign the input selectors to the component jacks, just as you have to do for the digital inputs; ie tell the receiver that when you press 'DVD' take the video signal from component input 1. There should be a choice in the receiver's setup menus.

Also be sure that the tv's input is set to the input to which you connected the component video cable.

I have the same DVD player as you listed above. I know with mine I had to enter the setup menu of the DVD player without a disc in it and set which video and audio connections I was using. I was looking at the back of your receiver and it seems the input selectors might already be assigned for DVD use. Trying configuring the DVD to use component cables and connect the component out to DVD component in on the receiver and then go from the receiver to the TV

Thanks for all the input! With so many collective thoughts, I am sure we will solve this soon.
Many of the suggestions were previously tried. I am certain I am choosing the correct inputs for my receiver and TV but still see no picture. The idea to change the settings in my DVD sound promising but here is the Catch-22: Without a picture, I am unable to see the OSD for the DVD player and there is no display on the unit itself so I can't see if I am making any changes.
The idea of changing the settings on the receiver seem possible but wouldn't the fact that I also had no picture when bypassing the receiver also exclude that as a possibility??
Trying the DVD with S-Video is something I would like to keep as a last resort. Firstly, I have no S-Video cables on hand. Secondly, my wife is a freak about cable clutter and it would take an hour to pull everything apart to make the switch. Thirdly, isn't component a superior connection?

The problem has been solved. We were right all along. The problem is the component video outputs on the DVD player. After pulling my entire wall apart, I replaced the new unit with an old Pioneer(using the same connections) and everything worked immediately. Best Buy can have their Toshiba back and I will just continue using my old standby. Thanks everyone!!!
