DVD letterboxing - different on different players?

I just bought a new HDTV and a Denon DVD player (with HDMI). I also have a cheaper JVC DVD player (no HDMI).

When I look at a widescreen DVD on the Denon player, the black bars at the top and bottom (using the HDMI and upconverting or component connection) are larger than when viewing a DVD on the JVC (compoent connection).

On the JVC, the picture occupies about 3/4 of the picture area and the bars about 1/4 total. On the Denon the picture is about 2/3 and the bars 1/3.

This difference is annoying. What accounts for this difference?

Solutions, and widscreen explained.

The only things that I can think of is:

1.The settings on the Denon DVD player.

Solution: Check to make sure that the settings are right. Some of the Denon's have detailed set up areas. To include what kind of TV you have. 4:3 ratio TV, or 16:9 TV. Go through the set up on the Denon and make sure that your settings are correct.

2. The JVC has less settings to do stuff with. It is possible that the Denon is actually displaying it properly and the JVC is not. The JVC might have limited abilities to adjust for things. Like the TV selections on my 2910? There are several different types of film recordings, and the JVC might not be displaying them properly. I am attatching a link to explain what I am talking about.

These are just guesses on this, I am not 100% sure. But check the Denon's settings.

Here are the links:

Pretty good website for this kind of information.

Good luck,

As was mentioned by Snap. But, is your issue with the same DVD on the two players? One quick thing you can do is the measure the width of the image on the screen and height, divide and see if the answer is close enough to the letter box number on the back of the box. It should be pretty close. :)

Then, the player with the wrong size is the culprit; check the setup on that player as suggested.
