DVD doesn't come through TV speakers

Hello,
My husband and I have a Sony Wega and a Sony surround sound system.
The system was set up for us by someone else.
When we watch DVDs, the sound only comes out of the surround sound speakers and not out of the TV speakers. If we change the video source to Video 2 (TV) and keep the audio source set to DVD, we can hear the DVD audio out of the surround sound system and the TV, but cannot watch the DVD.

We'd like to hear audio out of the TV speakers when watching DVD.
Help?

Um.. not to put too fine a point on it, but... Why? The speakers in the TV can never match up to those on a full-bore surround system. Hell, I don't even have any audio going to my TV at all.. all it gets is what comes over the airwaves. Which would work, except I actually have the speakers in the TV disabled, and all sound, regardless of source, goes through my receiver.

The Sony DVD player should have digital connection (optical or coaxial) to the receiver, and that gives you surround with the 5.1 speakers, and,

the player should also carry a red and a white RCA type audio outputs which will give you 2 channel audio if connected to your TV's audio inputs for the specific Video input.

If you cannot power off the receiver when the DVD player is ON, reduce the receiver master volume when using the TV speakers. And as for the TV speakers, when you want surround sound, with the TV Audio menu, set the TV speakers to OFF.

If you want to listen through the tv speakers, why do you have a surround sound system? The main purpose of a surround sound system is for listening to dvds, in all their glory. Secondly, it's for listening to premium channels (HBO, Showtime, Starz, HD channels, etc.), when they broadcast in surround.

I think the man wants an answer to his question.

Could they, by any chance, wish to playback a movie and, on specific occasions, not wake up a child from sleep? Or something of the kind?

When my wife is watching her TV in the Kitchen, I will use the TV speakers to, say, listen to program NUMB3RS eventhough that maybe the best prime time CBSHD program for DD 5.1 sound. Otherwise, I will record it and play it back with my sound system when she's away.

Conclusion I'm sure he has a good valid reason to do this.

I hear ya, sk123.

Many installers simply don't bother connecting the TV audio. After all, it's another two or three dollars.

I, like yourself, don't agree with that. I don't always want to use the surround system, particularly when the grand-kids are watching their Dvds.

What input on the TV does the DVD player plug into? The reason I ask this is that usually each video input on a TV has a corresponding audio input, usually a red and white jack.

If those red/white jacks are not yet utilized, that's why your TV doesn't have sound when playing a DVD. That's a simple and inexpensive fix.

Look on the back of the DVD player for a pair of red/white jacks marked "audio out" or some such. Simply run an audio interconnect from the output on the DVD player to the input on the TV. You don't need to spend a fortune here. Go to Radio Shack, Home Depot, Lowes, whatever it takes.

You'll have to turn the TV all the way down when using the surround system but that's about the only way to accomplish what you want. It ain't no big thang, though.

Why not just "mute" the TV. That's what I do.

Mute would silence the TV, true, but...

...some sets, not all, display the word "MUTE" on the screen when it's active. By turning the volume down you avoid these unwanted graphics.

At least wo of my sets display this, a Toshiba and a Proscan.

I've got a similar setup in my living room. I use the red/ white/ yellow RCA jacks to the TV. I send the digital and S-Video to my receiver. When I want to here sound through the receiver, I turn volume down on TV, and listen through the receiver.

Late at night or when wife or kids are asleep (my dedicate HT room is still under construction) I listen through the TV.

You are of course correct and I don't know where my head was when I posted.

DVD TV Audio help needed

I have a sony dvd player with surround sound system that I have had for a while. The DVD player uses the 5 surround sound speakers automatically (obviously) but my question is, how can I listen to the regular tv through the surround speakers instead of the weak tv speakers? I though it would have been answered a few comments up when one was asking about the audio for the tv vs dvd player and the answer was connect the audio output from the dvd player to the tv input. I already have audio wires but mine are not from dvd out to tv in, the dvd has the input space... The dvd player does not have an audio space for output, only an input space... the only output on the dvd is for video. Does anyone have any answers to how to listen to the tv using the dvd players surround sound system. Please help me.

Is this some kind of all-in-one receiver/dvd combo unit? If so, it may not have any external inputs for other devices but if it does then all you have to do is run audio cables from the TV's fixed audio outs to an input on the receiver and then select that input on the receiver.

For example, if the receiver has an input named Aux, run audio cables from the TV to the Aux input and select Aux on the receiver. If it is a normal receiver with lots of audio inputs you can use any one of them (except Phono), including the audio portion of any input named 'Video x'. You will only get stereo input coming from the TV and will have to use a matrix decoder (like PLII, Neo:6, etc) to turn the stereo into surround.
