DVD Audio newbie question

I just bought the DVD audio version of Diana Krall's "Love Scenes" after reading the excellent review on this site. This is my first the DVD audio purchase. When listening to the DVD in Dolby D mode I noticed the sound coming from my rear surrounds sounded very low compared to the fronts and center channel. Is this how it is supposed to sound? I just assumed the levels coming from each speaker would be pretty much the same. I'm using a Panasonic DVD-RV 31 connected to an Onkyo TXD 595. My front speakers and rear surrounds our paradigm Atoms and a Paradigm center channel, I forget the model number of that. I've got all the speakers calibrated to the same levels except for the sub. Doesn't that mean that the fronts and rear's should be putting out the same level or is that just how the DVD is mixed? I do sometimes have a problem with the Onkyo where when I try to calibrate the rear speakers I don't get the pink noise tone until I adjust the level to a high level like seven or eight and then the tone slowly builds up to that level so perhaps there is a problem with my receiver? I have tried switching around the fronts and rear speakers and still have the same problem. Thing is, when I play movies (such as Saving Private Ryan or Finding Nemo) in DolbyD or DTS mode the rear channels sound fine even when their calibrated at the same level as the fronts. How do you have the player connected to the receiver?

In this particular case, it sounds like it is just the mix. I noticed that on two other Diana Krall SACDs, the surrounds were mixed relatively low, though it sounds just about right to me.

Have you listened to the DVD-A portion of the disc? You have to set your player to read the Audio portion, not the Video portion, to hear the hires DVD-A tracks, and with your equipment, you must also use analog connections to hear DVD-A.

Thanks for the reply. I have the player connected to the receiver via an optical cable. I noticed in the manual that this player does not play DVD Audio discs and theres no DVD Audio logo on the front of the plkayer. The back of the DVD jewel casse says "Dolby Digital Surround Sound" can be played on DVD video players but the "Advanced resolution Surround Sound" content requires a DVD Audio player, guess the content I'm hearing is the Dolby D? Just curious, is the Advanced resolution Surround Sound sound better quality than Dolby D or DTS? I'd never heard of Advanced resolution Surround Sound. I screwed up when buying this disc online, meant to buy the DTS version, oh well!

Sounds like you got the DD track on it. Does your receiver show that you are indeed playing DD, not pro logic?

Also, when you set up your system, did you level match all the speaker channels with an spl meter and test tones? If not, you need to do this no matter what you listen to.

But, music, in my opinion, should not be mixed as though the instruments and performers are in a circle around a recording mic but as you would sit in an auditorium. That said, the surround channels will be low level but certainly giving you a three dimentional space all around you.

I have several DVD-A and SACD including the "Love Scenes". Playing through the Denon Link of my universal player, all of the discs play much quieter in the rear channels, I think it is just the way they are mixed.

I would think so too. A more realistic presentation. The audience is usually not in the center of a music presentation
