Is anyone familiar with the newly released (approx. 2 mos ago) Pioneer DV-79AVi player? Is it truely a bargain, or a "wannabe" competitor to the hailed Denon 3910?

To quote an A/V buddy of mine, "the 79avi can go head-to-head with the denon 3910 and Onkyo 1000 and its hundreds less. It's also less than the 59avi. According to Pioneer, they said that although its a better player than the 59avi, they didn't want a higher price tag with hd players just around the corner. I also noticed that the 79avi weighs 19lbs and the 59avi weighs only 12 lbs. 19 lbs for a dvd player.....what the heck is in that thing???"

Well, one thing - the 3910 weighs 17.6lbs. Lots of beef in both units!

I recently purchased the DV-79AVi, and I can tell you first hand that it is truly a remarkable unit. The color reproduction is great and the sound quality is awesome.

I dont think you can go wrong with this unit, And I would put it up against the 3910 without hesitation. Go to the AVS forum, there is alot of talk about this player over there.

hey Buckeye (yup, it's me, from avs ;) )...

there is a thread over in AVS about "reports on 79avi"...I have tried the unit couple of weekends ago, and it is an excellent unit. The 3910 still has a very Slight edge in PQ (less noise, better details) but the 79 did improve a little over the 59 in terms of PQ. In the Audio dept, the 3910 is still better, and the Sp1000 will simply just blow it away..

But I will say that for the price, the 79avi is a true bargain, and a stellar performer! great job on Pio's Elite team on this one...

Component Video Rocks on the DV79avi

I would say since I have had two working for about a month that the pioneer is a better player. I the year that we have had the 3910 they have been in and out of service more than i want to admit. The firmware is not as buggy in the pioneer as it is in the 3910. Using a 5805 and kef xq speakers out of the 6 channel outputs the 3910 edges it out in sound quality, however when using firewire the dv79 walks on the 3910. The firewire audio in the pioneer is far better than that of the 3910.

as for weight, it's difficult to beat a cary audio DVD6, which weighs 35 pounds, and makes my denon 2910 feel like a toy. anyone have any experience comparing the new pioneer to a 2910, or anyone gone from a 2910 to a 3910 who can tell me the differences in audio quality? i bought the cary DVD6 after a lengthy demo for redbook cd, and am only holding onto the 2910 for SACD/DVDA. my cary lacks SACD, it will play DVDA but not at the high res rate, but in comparing the 2910 playing DVDA & the cary, i am hard pressed to tell the difference. am looking for to upgrade to a new player for SACD & DVDA. im not so much concerned w/ PQ as audio quality, not that i want a bad picture, but happy w/ PQ i have now from either the cary or the denon.

I was one of the 1st to get a pre-production 79AVi 2 months ago, and was able to compare it in-house with the 3910, and also came to the conclusion that the 79Avi is a superior player, both for video and audio with my system.

And the fact that you can pass 480i over HDMI to an outboard scaler is just icing on the cake. You can't do that with the Denon...

The 79AVi at 480i over HDMI will be perfect for my upcoming Gennum and Realta scalers... :D

What type of display are you using? I have a Samsung DLP with the 59avi. I previously owned the Denon 2900. My neighbor/friend has the same tv with the 3910. He previously had the 2910. PQ with my display is best with the Pio. 59avi. There is some slight macroblocking on my neighbors tv with the 3910.

This doesnt make sense. If you are comparing 6 channel outs on both players and the 3910 sounds better, then the Denon has better audio than the dv79. Firewire bypasses the audio processing in both players and sends it to the 5805 for processing. So I think the correct assumption would be that the 5805 sounds better than the 3910.

Has anyone done an HQV test on the 79avi and the 3910?

While they are both killer players,,, which of them is the "finest" in terms of video production?

Does the audio sound better on the Denon in 2 channel?
