DV-563A front panel display glitch?

I picked up a used Pioneer 563-A DVD/SACD player off eBay last week. The first time I powered it on the front panel display did not light. Now when I power it on it comes on, gives the "welcome" and "loading" messages and displays the disc (if any) but then turns off after playing awhile - so I can't see what tracks I'm selecting, for instance. Unit seems fine otherwise.

Is this a sign of a broken front panel display or a quirk of this model?

I am using it in a music-only system so I can't use the onscreen displays.

Also, the manual says very little about using the panel display - do I need to lug a TV in & hook it up to do the intial setup?? Oy!

Check front panel or remote for a FL dimmer button. It sounds to me like the dimmer is set to off. On the 578-A there is a dimmer button on the front of the player.

Hope this helps,

I thought of that and tried the button but, nah. However, maybe the dimmer is turning on by itself for some reason?

I'm wondering if after I go thru the initial setup with the onscreen menus it will somehow help - maybe by resetting some sort of internal programming, or excorcising evil spirits. I'm going to lug a TV in today and do it. At least I can switch it from 5.1 mode (where it is now) to 2 channels since I only have a stereo system at present.

Maybe it's something I can live with for now. Or maybe it just needs to "break in". ;)

Anyway if this all works out I might have an Arcam Alpha 8 CD player for sale soon!

Well, it's working now. For the first day or two after I got it the panel did not light up at all. Then, the panel lit up and worked for twenty minutes or so. Finally, as of a couple of days ago it works fine.

Go figure, huh?

I'm guessing it was some sort of internal battery that needed to recharge. Or evil spirits that needed exorcising.

So if anyone else gets a used 563A that doesn't light up maybe my experience will help...

Now all I need is some SACDs and DVD-A discs to hear for myself what the fuss is about.
