I understand how good they are but the price must be nosebleed territory.

Not necessarily, as the 15" cone may be designed for controlled cone break up, as proposed and written about by Ted Jordan. It is a great shame that most designers these days do not know of his work. I am certain Ted was right and designers should take a fresh look at his work. By the look of the size of the tweeter, I suspect the crossover may be 3.5K or even above.

Ted was right, but the results of his work are counter intuitive, but correct in my view.

I will look for the details of this design with great interest.

Altec coaxial studio monitor speakers use 15" woofers with a horn loaded tweeter. The filter frequency has always been 1500 Hz while they were manufactured by the Altec factory before closing in the late 20th century. An engineer then bought the machinery and Great Plains Audio was founded; this firm still manufactures several Altec designed drivers under the GPA brand:


In the specs listing, it states a linear frequency response from 20-20,000 Hz. That's a very optimistic figure which is unreachable, taking into account of the woofer's low Qts of around 0.25.

I used a couple of those drivers in some stage monitor speakers. They were fair, and probably good for their time, but not something I would want to employ now. So those Dutch & Dutch drivers will have to be way better than those.

I already got a 15" diy sub I can’t . lift these speakers weigh tripled as much . 300 pounds each plus !!! I got more then enough bass I could use sats as mains if my Klipch icons broke .

Crossover point on Dutch & Dutch 8c between mid and tweeter is 1250Hz, surely not higher than that!

Overall, I have to say this does not sound like a very intelligent design to me. I will be surprised if it comes anywhere near to justifying its price.

IMHO: You cannot say, just looking at specs!

The spec sheet shows 'separate electronics', so I'm assuming active crossovers, too.

But I'm confused- the specs also show that the weight is 309lb and call them 'bookshelf speakers'. Does this mean that they ARE part of the bookshelf?

I heard from some people at Axpona listening to those speakers.....

Seems like they are rocking like .... INSANE ....
But I reckon price? :eek:

Well .... standmount I believe .... they are on a stand
very NOT BOOKSHELF

Dutch & Dutch only do fully active speakers with DSP, the other models have plate amps, this one comes obviously with external dsp processor and amps.

I live in a flat, and they could fit here, if I won the Eurojackpot I assume

I would just call them 'standmount' speakers. We really need to retire the word 'bookshelf' in bookshelf speakers. No one puts speakers in bookshelfs anymore.

As for the D&D speakers, I did hear them today at Axpona. I can't speak for the sound quality as they were placed in a busy hotel lobby, but the low-frequency directivity control was truly impressive. Cool speaker.

your right obsolete terms . Must be amazing to go to Axpona or any audio show.
Even if it’s not a floor stander. it’s not a bookshelf speaker , and it’s heavier than your average floor stander .
This brand makes a 15” when it’s also got two LF: 15″ aluminium cone (x2) I assume on the back ?
Most brands abandoned 8 inch bookshelfs.

I thought most low frequencies were non-directional, and that explained our inability to state precisely where they originate from, as compared to higher frequencies.
