After looking at the manual over and over again i still can not figure out how to set my pioneer VSX-515-k in DTS mode.
And just to be clear, dts raises the quite parts so you dont have to raise the volume when ppl are sleeping at night right?

i can not figure out how to set it up.

any ideas? thanks

Hope this helps

Usually to take advantage of dts you need to make sure that your dvd player is configured properly. Go into the set up mode for your dvd player and enable dts. (Refer to your dvd players owners manual.) Also, make sure that both your receiver and dvd player are dts compatible.

In addition to properly configuring your dvd player you will have to go into the audio menu to select dts for each movie you watch. dts is not available on all dvds so you will have to make sure it lists it on the back cover of the disc as well.

dts is an audio format, that uses less compression than dolby digital. I think you are confusing dts with a dsp mode such as midnight theater.

As posted above, make sure your dvd player is set to play in the DTS mode. You'll be able to access this with the dvd's remote. Secondly, make sure the dvd is DTS encoded, and you select the DTS option in the dvd discs language options before you play the movie. DTS will not play DD movies, they must be recorded in DTS. DTS Neo 6 which is a matrixed surround, will play DD movies in Neo 6 if you have that option. It's used for 2 channel or 5.1 channel non DTS movies, and sounds very good. IMO, it's a little better than PLIIX - less compression. Finally, make sure the receiver is set to "auto decode" when watching dvd's, and it will automatically read a DTS encoded dvd. DTS setup is not cut and dry, so hope this helps a bit.

DTS is a surround-sound format, like Dolby Digital, and needs to be encoded that way by whoever mastered your DVD.

If you look on your remote, there should be two buttons that will help you:
1) The "Midnight/Loudness" button will let you put the receiver into midnight mode, to reduce the the extra low frequencies from your subwoofer and optimize the other frequencies for low-volume listening
2) The "Dialog E" button will enable the dialog enhancement feature, which basically emphasizes anything coming out of your center channel.
