I would like advise on speaker placement and types of speakers to use in a DTS Neo X setup. 1. Can I use bipolar speakers as my front height speakers? 2. Where are all the positions where bipolar speakers can be used, such as surround sides, surround rear and etc. Last but very important, is there a website where I can find speaker placement for my setup? I have a Denon AVR 4520CI, with Prologic 2 Z, DTS Neo X and Audssey DSX. I'm running a 9.2 setup with front height speakers. Is there any flexibility in speaker placement? and if so what are the options? My Denon is 9 channel powered with processing for 11 channels if I add a stereo amp. I can't find much information on DTS Neo X, I guess because it was so short lived. Thank you all in advance

DTS:X is the immersive movie codec but DTS Neo:X is only a sound mode/upmixer in the avr, Dolby PLIIx and z and Audyssey DSX are also sound modes/upmixers.

You might want to check the manual....

Ps the 4520 doesn't support DTS:X

1. Yes
2.pretty much can use them anywhere. Any reason specifically bipoles?
this is the basic PLIIz recommendation but iirc it works for the others, and yes there is some flexibility laterally but 3’ seems to be the number for height above the mains. That way they’ll work more as one.
Just curious. Do you already have these speakers? It’s just a little unusual with the shift to atmos/dtsx to be building an old school pliiz/x dts neo system.

I have 2 pair of bipolar speakers and wanted to include them in the mix for more diffuse sound. Directional speakers draw attention to themselves. I bought a Denon AVE 4520ci for $400 which is a pretty good price. I'm not a big fan of mounting speakers on my ceiling yet, maybe in the future. He also included two 20mm cooling fans. The price for atmos is crazy right now and if or when I do go atmos, I will be going all the way with a 9.2.4 channel system. Right now, I want to get the best sound possible with the gear I have. Thank you for the chart. I have been catching the devil trying to find speaker placement options for this receiver and the owners manual was of no help. If there is any thing else I need to know, please share. I'm a newbie and I'd like to impress myself with my efforts.

Reread your post and don't know where I got the DTS:X bit.

There are suggestions for speaker placement on the Dolby and DTS sites, not sure anything particularly addresses bipole speakers. As you mentioned not much about the now defunct Audyssey DSX, altho some thoughts from various discussions if you search "audyssey dsx speaker placement". I've not used bipole speakers for surrounds for many years previous to my 4520, as I prefer monopole, but I'd think rear surrounds likely the best place for them. The manual starting on page 184 does have some info on what speaker positions and features are relevant to each sound mode.

I've used a 9ch setup with front wides and rear surrounds with my 4520, never got around to wiring/mounting front heights; now I'm back to a 7ch setup with rear surrounds, felt my room a bit narrow for wides. Good luck on finding your optimum setup.

Curious, how big a room do you have?

My room is only 20 feet wide, but 20 feet long. Much to narrow for wide speakers. Honestly too small for a 9.2/ 11.2 system, but the price of the receiver wouldn't let me pass it up. I'm thinking of taking down a wall between the den and living room which will increase my room to 20 feet wide and 50 feet long. Right now, I'm gathering information to help me make a final decision on what I will do. As of now, nothing is etched in stone.
