Driving myself nuts

The madness started a little over a month ago when, on a whim, I picked up a pair of Ascend 170 classics from an Audiogoner local to me. I listened to them, was impressed and proceeded to pick up a 340 classic center from another local fellow.

A couple weeks go by & I make the decision to sell off my old 7 channel setup & replace it with Sierras across the front, 200SE's on the side & move the 170s to the rear. In the end I felt I'd have something better & some cash in my pocket to boot. The only reservation I had was, the size of the Sierras. Could they really cut it for spirited music listening & action movie dynamics?

Enter the discovery of Salk SongTower & SongCenter a few days ago. Yes, I've read all about them. My impression is that if I love the Ascend sound then the Salks will be even better. Dynamics won't be an issue, & the finishes are gorgeous. I don't really like the natural finish of the Sierras, but could live with the piano black. Then I started to add it up. Twice the price of Sierras, ugh.

So here I sit, all but the main L/R of my old setup are sold & I can't make up my mind. So, who has heard both? How much better is the Song Series? Based on my experience with the 170's I think I'd be perfectly happy with the Sierras but not having heard either the Sierras or SongTowers it's all a bit of a mystery.

Help!

This is called upgradititis (not sure if spelled right).

Many audiophiles are infected with this deadly disease. In due time, it will drain you both emotionally and financially.

The cure, enjoy what you have right now. Wait a year. By then if you still feel the urge to upgrade, then upgrade. And then promise yourself that you will stick with your new fear for at least another year. And so on. :)

I'm all too familiar with upgraditis, been inflicted with the disease for awhile I'm afraid. Usually I just make a descision & go for it. But see, this time it's different. I'll actually be buying new equipment. Something I have not done for a long time.
