Dream'eo Enza Portable Media Center

Gizmo Cafe's Wayde Robson wonders: Are the manufacturers of Portable Media Center players like Dream'eo) bracing for Microsoft's Zune onslaught? Dream'eo has recently reduced the cost of its Enza Portable Media Center to $169.

The Dream'eo Enza is a 20GB Portable Media Center that runs a portable Windows XP Media Center Edition interface similar to other products like the Creative Zen PMC, Samsung's YH-999 or iRiver PMC120. Dream'eo's 3.5 inch 320x240 pixel display will playback your audio and video media files on the go using Microsoft's nicely linear and easy to use MC interface. Of course in comparison to the other Portable Media Centers by ahem, formidable brands like Samsung and iRiver this one is probably the weakest of the bunch. Although it looks slick enough the battery life is rated at only three hours for video and six hours for playing back WMA files. This should be a problem for most people since battery life spans in that range harkens back to an era closer to the begging of the new millennium. This is 2006 and we have removable battery packs that can run for PMPs that can do up to 9 hours of video.

We can probably expect to see more price reductions on Media Center style players as the end of '06 draws closer. Microsoft has big plans for the Zune project that will eclipse previous Microsoft portable ventures. But you simply can't deny the price. For almost half the cost of an iPod video you have a larger screen that plays back Window's media.
